I think Nintendo has a very good chance but I wouldn't dare speculate on the outcome before seeing Microsoft and Sony's machines. Launching first can also be the death of a console look at DreamCast which was killed off in its prime because Sony launched shortly after cutting it down. DreamCast was an amazing piece of hardware it was largely pioneering online and the VMU made the console completely unique. Yet Sega failed.

If Microsoft released a 10x the power nextbox with Kinect 2.0 and a tablet controller a year later at only 50-100$ more I could see MS cutting WiiU down. Considering how both PS3 and 360 made massive strides towards the end of the generation lead me to believe that even the slightest mistake on Nintendo's side could ruin any chance of victory.

We will have to wait and see what Nintendo's competitors bring to the table!

I'm inclined to agree with this. Nintendo need to give the WiiU enough of graphical prowess that it hold it's own against the coming PS720, but still have as "low tech" as possible as to let the 3rd parties make affordable games (for themselves and the constumers).

I see it going down one of two ways for Nintendo: either really, really good or just down the drain... And it really depends on MicroSony I'm afraid. The tablet isn't such a big thing as motion controler was when it first came out. We're kinda used to tablets, but had it come out 2-3 years ago... Man, they would have sold 150+ consoles then!

Guys I wasn't saying WiiU could DreamCast just that superior hardware launching first has lost in the past. Even if Sega had the finances to keep DreamCast on the market it would still have failed to beat PS2. Sega was going down earlier but DreamCast was an exceptional machine and lost despite an early launch some amazing software and a ground breaking innovations.

Even an amazing machine with a head start can lose!

I think the defining factor that will form the outcome is if Microsoft or Sony can offer all of the WiiU functionality and more for a competitive price. If they can successfully offer Nintendo's features at a price consumers can afford then they could very well take Nintendo's throne even with Nintendo's head start.

Though one should redefine king of the generation. If Microsoft won the generation market share wise having double the sales Nintendo had. But lost money on every single unit and only profited a billion dollars the whole generation due to strong software sales. But Nintendo profited 3-billion due to a profit on every machine and software sales. Who really won the generation?

Cool.

Sorry, I was looking for someone that spoke of the consoles' graphic power and decided to attach myself to you since I like you the most.  Seems like the new generation of gamers expect home consoles to be on par with current computers (gaming media also has the mentality).  That thinking is pure idiotic.  You might as well be a PC gamer only if you think like that.  Asking for the most bleeding edge tech in a home console system is only asking the company to set themselves up for failure.

4 sure! You really have too factor in three things: Sold systemes, sold games and earned money! Then, and only then, do you have a winner!

No, I agree. It's strange that people still assume that putting out an underpowered console means doom, especially when Nintendo has made money hand over fist doing just that. But Nintendo seems to be banking on similar third party support to MS and Sony this time around, and I'm not sure third parties won't basically abandon them in a year or two if Vigil's recent statement that Wii U is merely on par with the PS3/360 is true. Still, like I said, that the Wii U's gimmick just doesn't strike me as a very good one is my real concern. Hopefully there's a "Wii Sports" in the works for it that will show everyone why this is such a brilliant thing, but for right now I'm just not seeing it.

But I don't really want anyone to fail out of the console market. Both Sony and Nintendo have shown bad tendencies when they've been dominant, and Microsoft has shown horrible ones without ever being truly dominant. The competition has been nothing but good, IMO.

No. If history has taught us anything, it's a coin flip when it comes to Nintendo and home consoles.

I believe they have a Wii U sports already in the works (early demo was probably part of the E3 demonstration on the controller abilities).  Not sure how they are going to package their controllers.  If they are still going to rely on the Wiimote along with the Wii U controller then you would think they would perhaps have to include both in the system.  Wii U Sports should be a given considering how much success they had with the previous two.

I like more competition also considering it keeps all companies on their toes (unless they make back room deals).  Even though I don't really Microsoft or Sony I still don't really want them to go.  I'll take them as competitors over Apple.  If Apple was the only one left in the home video game market I'd probably go back to playing cards and board games.  Actually, I'd just stick with PC then.

NES - huge success

SNES - success

N64 - fall from grace

GCN - walking through a dark alley

Wii - huge success

Wii U - success

Next system after Wii U - fall from grace

(I left the Color TV Game and Virtual Boy out of the list)

Or you could go back to the 8-bit days? ;)
