I haven't read each and every response in this thread, but most of the regular users in here (important emphasis) who support this rule are Americans. Or rather, it's basically just superchunk, although he had gotten along just fine with the previous rules, so it's not like he is really pushing for the enforcement of this new set of rules.

The real mindboggling thing is how it came to all of this though. A user, man-bear-pig, chose inappropriate avatars for pezus due to the outcome of a bet. The same user then makes a thread to complain about the avatars he chose, because apparently his girlfriend thought that he was gay. So the call against the topless avatars has more to do with pictures of men, rather than pics of both sexes. man-bear-pig's thread then gains support from quite a few users who have been speaking out against homosexuality in the past which consequently leads to making this whole thing look like the staff is giving in to homophobes. And that's really the odd thing about it. It's a site change that wasn't driven by the respected members of our community, but rather the troublemakers.

In the end though, the staff has once again shown to be sensible enough to take suggestions into consideration, so ultimately there probably won't be much of a change at all, just a stricter enforcement of the old rules.

Very good post that seems to summarize this event completely.

I'd like to point out as Rol mentioned, that even though I did state while at work I at times have to adjust my screens position to keep some avatars from being viewed,  I am 100% fine with the existing rules. They already covered NSFW content perfectly fine. I do think that there were a few users with almost naked women that clearly were crossing the boundary, yet they were never moderated. I also think there were one or two male avatars that should also be removed as well for the same reasons. Regardless if bare male chest is sociall acceptable or not. Its too easy to be misconstrued as something else and as such is NSFW.

However, similar to the 4-word rule from a few years ago... including the long whine session about it, this is just a reaction to something that was starting to get abused and carried away. In the end it really comes down to how the mods enforce their rule set. The only change I really see that needs to be said would be a thread that states:

The site is starting to have a NSFW issue in regards to avatars. As such we will be paying more attention to the avatars you pick and requesting some of you to make changes. If you continue to make the same mistakes after warnings, you will be banned. Keep in mind this is a global site that should be viewable by anyone at anytime and as such, be respectful with your choices of content while staying true to your identity. Thank you, the VGC overlords.

Very well said SuperChunk. I'm not sure what I've said (because I'm sure it didn't ever really matter) but both of your views are great. OFE.

I think i should share my opinions here since these rules are still up for debate I'm glad the mod team/site admins are at least discussing this and not jumping the gun. Which i think, if you did implement these proposed rules without any discussion, would be very bad management of the situation.

My opinion on this matter is very similar to what Rol has said previously in the thread...certain users have obviously (and MY GOD WAS IT OBVIOUS!) crossed the line when it came to what was acceptable and what was not. For example, trucks/seece's avatars of the guys from Supernatural were okay...in fact i personally don't even see those pics as being sexual..let alone hyper-sexual. But then some1 had a pic of two almost completely naked guys sitting together in a sexual position that was clearly crossing the line. The same goes for sexual female avatars, Pezus use to have a lot of avatars of a certain model (forgot her name) but this was fine as well, no nudity, just an attractive model. But some people have almost completely naked woman in their avatar like pbroy's this would again be crossing the line.

It should have been up to the mods to draw the line, and let those with the avatars that were clearly inappropriate know that, maybe give them a warning etc. This could have avoided the whole situation imo.

I don't think any new rules should come in to effect, but rather stricter adherence to the rules that are already in place. And if the current rules are not clear enough for interpretation then make them clear.

What the mods also need to take into consideration is that it wasn't as if everybody had soft porn avatars, it was only a few, still is only a few. And now the whole community is paying the consequences. Come on guys surely more thought should have gone into dealing with this...

My avatar was an artistic masterpiece, not trashy like the other ones.. :P

There had to be more thought and effort put into that shot to make it look sexy, compared to the others.

Why is everyone using this thread to bash Americans?

Would you guys like it if I called whatever country you're from a bunch of morons?

Apparently a staff which includes many gay British members is really made up of homophobic Americans.

In regards to some of the responses in this thread so far: While I appreciate the feedback from the community, many of you have gone too far. I am seriously contemplating making a run through this thread and banning several people. It's one thing to say you don't approve of the new rule or complain about its implications, but it's another to insult the staff and spam up the thread.

I agree with pretty much everything that you are saying here.  I was just getting upset that people were using this issure to say things about how stupid America is or how prude we are.  Trust me, I'm not prude and love to look at naked ladies.

The thing is that even though I personally am not offended by any of the avatars that anyone had I can see guys like Superchunk and Rath's points.  Those kinds of avatars do make this site hard to view in certain situations.

Ok,I have read the whole thread. Like someone previous said not sure why but i enjoyed reading how people were reacting to the new rules. I for one think that this is way to strict, and cant believe that MBP was the one who gave pezus the pic then complained about it that is completely retarded. It seems the newer people that have been joining are more the people that have been complaining.

I have no problem with seeing topless guys or girls on the page. In fact i quiet enjoyed it because it was people didn't care if people through they were gay or whatever. When i found out that one of the avatars was actually the poster blow my mind. He isn't aloud to show himself of because some people get offended?

What if you were a bodybuilder and visiting a forum about body building. Are you not loud to go onto that at work? Its just stupid. A way to get around it. Most people have smart phones these days how hard is it to visit this site on your mobile while at work?

How about this, new rule you can have a sexy avatar but can only use that sexy avatar in my threads.

Sounds fair I think.

Not much of value is lost here. Most avatars that don't follow these rules are utterly tasteless anyway.

Thanks man!

I've now got the perfect profile pic. I had to get rid of the Stars and Stripes though.

Hey I'm bumping this.

Did the rules change over summer while I was gone or have people just ignored them?

Am I glad this is an issue again.
Love how all the people who were upset about avatars and sigs are xbox fans, and all the people with "tasteless avatars" were sony fans.
Now that Sony is dominating, we can go back to undermining and demonizing their fanbase.
