Any sustained physical activity is better than none.
If someone has been in the habit of maintaining a lifestyle of minimal physical activity, they'll get the most benefit from virtually any type of activity that changes this.
And if the individual is up to it, intense, sustained physical activity is even better utilizing a mix of muscular strength conditioning and cardiovascular activities. For those who are in better physical condition, there is probably less benefit to be gained by using video game based exercise programs.
And of course, not all are the same. Playing Wii Sports, which doesn't actually require any sort of full body movement once one learns how the controls work and how to cheat them, is not the same as any of the more structured exercise "games" like Zumba, Your Shape, UFC Trainer, etc.
It's misleading to lump everything related to "motion gaming" together in the same pile, when there is clearly a difference between the more entertainment based games and the more result oriented programs that use a computer game format. Some of them are for all intents and purposes, the same as in home DVD based exercise programs with the added benefit of progress tracking.
Playing any Wii game with waggle controls is not a substitute for dedicated exercise; it's entertainment first and foremost. But for some it's still better than nothing as long as they're not fooling themselves into thinking "this counts as me exercising and getting in shape."
Wii Fit definitely has its limitation as far as what type of results one can reasonably expect to see from consistent use, but the program does focus on body awareness, and if that is the one thing anyone takes away from using it, and they are legitimately concerned about improving or maintaining healthy levels of conditioning, they're more likely to start running, bicycling, joining a gym (and actually going), doing resistance training with weights, etc. to get the results they want.
The OP comes off as a troll post by overgeneralizing and being worded in such a way as to deliberately invoke contradictory responses. Clearly, the purpose is not for people to chime in their acknowledgement regarding the ineffectiveness of any and all motion based apps, be it exercise program, entertainment game or other.
