Good point. That goes to show you the importance of the power of a brand. Oddly that doesn't apply to the Game boy line as much, though the GBA did underperform for a Nintendo handheld (in relative terms of course). |
I though game boy advance done very well, especially as it was virtually a monopoly at that time. But you do know those total game boy sales include the first game boy from 1989 all the way up to the game boy color in 1998, despite game boy game boy color being a new format
Xbox One, PS4 and Switch (+ Many Retro Consoles)

Prediction: Switch will sell better than Wii U Lifetime Sales by Jan 1st 2018

Thanks I thought so, why do 3DS haters make the DS sound like it had nothing in the beginning while the 3DS had it all? |
Don't know, as I see it the 3DS had a very similar first year software-wise than DS.
Damn the 3DS is looking good right now! Need to keep the momentum going. Too bad they aren't launching Animal Crossing till next year in USA.

The PSP didn't suffer because of the PS2 decline or the slow PS3 start. When it failed, it did so on its own merits. Where brand mattered was in the beginning, because the system was bought due to lofty expectations (people expected it to be a great gaming device like the PS1 and PS2 before it). Hence the very good first year sales. If there was a direct correlation to brand power throughout the entire generation, then the PSP should have recovered like the PS3, but that didn't happen. Not sure why you think that the GBA underperformed. It sold at a much faster rate than the Game Boy. |
Hmm, I'm not sure. I didn't realize the GBA sold at that much faster a rate than the Game Boy, since the color version came out in 1998 and I believe that's when it really sold alot with pokemon (1996 in JP, 1998/9 in NA/EU). Without numbers it's hard to judge.
As for PSP failing on its own merits, you have a point about the PS3 thing. However, the PS3 recovered not due to its brand power, but due to its software and online offerings. PS3 made its own success imho, despite the harm cause to the PS brand with the PS3 launch. The PS3's pheonix is its own achievement imho. So it would seem that the PSP then failed due to the degradation of the brand in conjunction with a lackluster SW offering. I could be wrong.
Inching closer to the holidays, one week at a time. I'm getting kind of impatient to see how the Vita's numbers are going to look this Christmas. Sony has to be sweating right about now.
Any updates on this? I would like to see how the european increase in vita sales looks on the graph...
Ongoing bet with think-man: He wins if MH4 releases in any shape or form on PSV in 2013, I win if it doesn't.

There's enough data to figure that the GBA sold faster than the GB on VGChartz. If you add in http://www.japantimes.co.jp/text/nb20000615a4.html , then it's very clear.
- The original GB had sold 50 million up to 1996
- Between 1996 and 1999, the GB + GBC(1998) sold 30 million
- After that, the GBC sold 40 million
Which leaves you with
GB: 70 million with 9 years as the main handheld
GBC: 50 million with 3 years as the main handheld
GBA: 81 million with 3.5 years as the main handheld

Looks good. The GBA is a handheld beast then.
