The PSP didn't suffer because of the PS2 decline or the slow PS3 start. When it failed, it did so on its own merits. Where brand mattered was in the beginning, because the system was bought due to lofty expectations (people expected it to be a great gaming device like the PS1 and PS2 before it). Hence the very good first year sales. If there was a direct correlation to brand power throughout the entire generation, then the PSP should have recovered like the PS3, but that didn't happen.

Not sure why you think that the GBA underperformed. It sold at a much faster rate than the Game Boy.

Hmm, I'm not sure. I didn't realize the GBA sold at that much faster a rate than the Game Boy, since the color version came out in 1998 and I believe that's when it really sold alot with pokemon (1996 in JP, 1998/9 in NA/EU). Without numbers it's hard to judge.

There's enough data to figure that the GBA sold faster than the GB on VGChartz. If you add in http://www.japantimes.co.jp/text/nb20000615a4.html , then it's very clear.

- The original GB had sold 50 million up to 1996
- Between 1996 and 1999, the GB + GBC(1998) sold 30 million
- After that, the GBC sold 40 million

Which leaves you with

GB: 70 million with 9 years as the main handheld
GBC: 50 million with 3 years as the main handheld
GBA: 81 million with 3.5 years as the main handheld
