BF3 is not next gen. BF3 doesn't look significantly better than Bad Company 2 and it's clearly designed with consoles in mind. Only minor X11 effects are on the PC version of BF3 but the main assets are the same between PC and console versions, such as character models, amount of polygons, base textures, mipmaps.

In a couple of years you will see Frostbite 3 engine that will be truly designed for next gen consoles and the PC versions of Frostbite 3 games will have 16GB recommended system RAM and 4 GB video ram.

Owning the PS3 version on a 46" 1080p TV and playing it on my buddies PC shows quite a difference in techinical capabilities. Watch this full screen in HD, look at more than the up front textures. Lighting, smoke, water, drawing distance with higher textures on PC, animation, destruction... so many things are simply better. This all from the first game made on the engine that was also designed to be ported down to consoles. Imagine what it would be if it was on high-end PCs and next gen hardware. Frostbite 2 is intended for next gen stuff. 4GB shared RAM... that's all your getting at best. Quote me.

Especially considering the RAM usage for BF3 maxed

Yes that is 2GB VRAM and up to almost 4GB of system RAM

You can see why they want 4GB+ total RAM next gen

.... on an un-optimized game build. Remember that this is a game that is also offered with a heavily optimized variant with some stuff turned off and running very well on two consoles with only 512MB total RAM for everything.

BF3 is quite well optomised, and the console versions have a lot of stuff turned off not just some and everything else is dialed back, including lower player count, lower res textures, lower res shadows, no tessellation, less particles and less volumetric effects being the main factors.

sure with optimisation on a closed system they could probably get it below 4GB and if they cut features even less. But I bet they would prefer to do more next gen than they are doing now on PC, their destruction is still limited with pre build destruction, popin is still a problem when flying etc, disappearing chunks even on PC. Less than 4GB of RAM would be limiting compaired to what they can do now on PC let alone in 5 years. Of course there are other factors like CPU/GPU etc but RAM is a major factor. I doubt there is a chance in hell of them getting 8GB of course, 6GB is unlikely but possible (4GB+2GB VRAM), 4GB I would say is most likely for Sony and MS 2GB would be hugely limiting for games moving forword.

Especially if they want this kind of physics next gen

I was going to show this to show the true graphical difference between console generations.

Your BF3 video has no significant difference between console and PC xcept for the framerate, which proves that BF3 isn't a next gen game, nor is Frostbite a true next gen engine.

That's a comparison with a very early Xbox game and a very mature 360 upgrade.... very big difference from a game that while being made on next gen hardware was also designed with the goal of being relatively easily downgraded to current gen consoles.
