N64 was equally good so theres no point on debating which one is better, both (still) are AMAZING devices with AMAZING games........

Gamecube rules, N64 sux!

Name me 10 great GC games, and I will name you 20 Great N64 games. Now you could add all the multi plat games from the GC and it might win, just because the N64 was basically missing any multi plat support. I never was that excited for the GC.

I think multi-platform (ie 3rd party) games did make a difference for the GC, even though it was still lacking compared to it's 2 competitors.

Just think if you bought a N64 after a SNES and you didn't even get a sequel to Street Fighter 2 (which sold 6.3 million copies and was best selling 3rd party game of the generation.)  It would be a major disappointment losing all the franchisees it did with the N64. At least the GC started getting back some multi-platform games.

I'd have to more or less agree with brendude13 personally. I think many of the ''classics'' for the N64 are horrid while the GameCube had many fantastic games, although some were indeed multiplatform.

Just checked your age, left a comment and came back. You had to have grown up with the N64. Are you serious? I am sure you are since you said it, but come on! Those are the games that started it all. First 3D Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong (more or less), Banjo, F-zero, Conker, Perfect Dark, Goldeneye, Shadows of the Empire, etc. They may have not been pretty, and developers were trying to figure out the 3D control back then, but they were great for what it was back then. The start of the 3D age. I am not saying Nintendo was first, but they started the graphics wars I think. Forget about any battle that the Snes, Genesis, whoever else had. When you read magazines back then it was all about PS graphics, and N64 graphics. Which were better.  For what they had that was a great system. For what the GC had it was not really. Could have done so much more. But we got more of the same, and not much else. The extra effort from 3rd parties was appreciated, but that was not enough. You may not agree with me, but you must agree with the sales of the system.

I thought that the 5th generation as a whole, especially the N64, was a trainwreck. Early 3D gaming was marred by awkward controls and hideous graphics as well as some downright attrocious game design. Mario 64 was good but after Super Mario World 1 and 2 I expected more levels and better boss fights. Also, thumbs down to collect-a-thons. Ocarina of Time had at least a dozen issues that prevented me from finishing it ranging from gigantic, barren wastelands to having to pause / unpause the game so many times in the Water Temple to equip / unequip those damn boots. I loved Conker's Bad Fur Day and it remains not only my favorite 64 game but one of my favorite 5th generation games. Perfect Dark and GoldenEye 007 didn't exactly impress me with their terrible boss fights, awkward controls, lousy graphics and offline multiplayer. Additionally, I hated the first stealth level in Perfect Dark and the statue graveyard in GoldenEye. I haven't played much Donkey Kong 64, Banjo Kazooie or Shadows of the Empire. As far as the graphics of the PS1 and N64, it was like arguing over who was the strongest midget. I saw what the 5th generation consoles had to offer and I ran to the PC with the exception of a few RPGs. In recent years I forced myself through everything from Mario 64 to Metal Gear Solid and while they are good games, far better existed on the consoles that came before and after. Personally, I couldn't care less about what console was new and original, I care about what console was good and as far as I am concerned, the GameCube has quality games in spades compared to the N64. Just my two cents.

If the N64 was an abomination, then I must be one of Satan's spawn as much as I've enjoyed playing the games on that thing.

The reason that it failed was because it used an outdated format (cartridges), and Sony did an excellent job of marketing itself as the "cooler" system to the beer drinking jocks of the world.

There are some points I agree and disagree with in this post.

The N64 was certainly a great system with some obviously fantastic games, so it's hardly an abomination. And having cartridges definitely did not contribute to its success.

However, a huge aspect of the Playstation's success wasn't just in appealing to jocks. If you look at the hardware totals, the PS1 and NES are basically on par in terms of hardware sales in NA and Japan. The vast majority of the growth came from Europe and the developing markets. The most important thing that Sony did in terms of growing the gaming market was making millions of gamers in the PAL region enter the home console market through games that appealed to the market (e.g. Gran Turismo).

Truth be told, some of my post might have been tongue in cheek.

I do agree with you that Sony definitely expanded the market.  Many of it was due to it's advertising to the developing markets.  Another thing that Sony did well was  to be the first system to usher in the new generation of substantially better graphics.  While the N64 was more powerful, Sony did it first.  Which brings me to another point.  Sony used being first strongly to it's advantage.  They made it seem like their Playstation was the only gaming system to have.

They didnt make it seem like anything, for all intents purposes it WAS the only gaming system to buy, at least for a little while. It was out two whole years before N64, thats a long time and in that time was competing against PS??? Sega Saturn?? Yeah how long that last??

Exactly.  Sony made people believe the way that you did.  The Saturn was competing with it and some people (I was one of them) waited for the N64 to come out.

Also, being the only system out doesn't guarantee anything.  It didn't work for the Dreamcast.  My point is that the marketing for the PS was extremely well done.  It in truth was not the only system to have...

This is a list of mainly sub-par series entrees (Mario Kart Double Dash, Mario Sunshine, F-Zero Cube, Wave Race Cube), along with bad games that GameCube supporters like to pretend were good in order to fluff up lists like these (Eternal Darkness, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, Luigi's Mansion, "Rogue" Leader), and games that didn't even exist on the system (Tales of Phantasia).

This was the thing about the GameCube, even the few actually good games it had (like RE4, Animal Crossing) were better and more popular on other consoles. You also had to put up with the weirdest and least functional controller ever released: tiny d-pad that was essentially unusable, shoulder buttons that were very unresponsive, a trigger button that no one can even find, and face buttons that you can never transition between because of that giant green button in the middle. Try using that controller on the Wii, it is impossible to play many SNES and N64 games because required button combos are impossible: Mario World is a good place to start.

I don't even think that GameCube is only the worst console Nintendo released, I think it is the worst console ever released that sold over 10 million units. It is the only console that has no classics; and that list above is evidence, since not one game that can be counted a classic is listed on it; the closest it gets are a very small handful of bad ports that are considered classics on other consoles - or in the case of RE4, a game vastly improved upon when released on other consoles (Wii and PS2).

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.
