Forums - Sony - Sony: Low demand, cheap pricing shelved international UMD Passport

VG247

Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida has explained why the UMD Passport system, which allows Japanese gamers to pay to transfer their UMD-based PSP games to a Vita, isn’t coming to the US and Europe.

In an interview with Wired, Yoshida named two reasons he believes contributed to the decision not to bring the UMD Passport scheme to the west.

“The system has been introduced in Japan, where there is a much larger demand for PSP games. When you look at the release schedule of new titles there are still lots of PSP games being released in Japan and being announced for release. Lots of people who are interested in trying Vita are also interested in playing PSP games that they might purchase before Vita comes out, and will not necessarily choose the digital version. So there is a lot more demand to introduce a program like that,” he said.

“The other point is that when you look at PSP titles sold digitally in the States or Europe, games are sold for a really reasonable price. You can buy Final Fantasy Tactics for $10. That’s a great price. There are many, many games that are sold at an affordable price. Because people in Japan are not getting the digital copy for free, because it costs us money to develop and maintain the system so we are asking people to pay somewhere between $5 and $10 to receive the digital copy in addition to what they have on the UMD.

“When you compare that to the price of games here, PSP games in Japan are sold at a much higher price, so people see the value in spending the $5 to $10 to get the digital copy. But when the games are already sold at a lower price in the U.S. we see less value in introducing that kind of system. The combination of the new titles available, or the lack of, and the price difference, the company decided to do that.”

Yoshida said Sony is still planning on bringing the PS Suite to Vita, allowing for native support for Android titles, but has other priorities for digital content first.

“The goal was, we get all PSP downloadable games to work on PS Vita, and the PS1 games to work on PS Vita. From a PSP emu standpoint, we are almost there. Ninety-plus percent of PSP PSN games are already on the Japanese store to download,” he said.

“And the team is focusing on getting the U.S. and European launch as good in terms of coverage of the PSP titles on the store. So that’s the focus. Because of that, we are really trying for a high percent of the PSP games to go on the PS Vita for launch in the U.S. and Europe. After that we will shift focus to get PS1 games on PS Vita.”

The Vita launches in the US and Europe on February 22, and in Australia on February 23. One more sleep.

So the prices in Japan for digital copies are more expensive because of the program?  Or do they just jack the price up because they offered the program?

Eh, that's bullshit. Let the customers decide what they want to do. I have almost 40 psp games so I sure as hell would save money by spending $5 to $10 for each game that I have rather than spending $10-40.

Sounds like some kind of nazi rhetoric to me.

Either a bad translation or sony needs to stop being a c*nt, sorry that's harsh and nasty language, but that is effectively how this sounds.

You know what would save more money? keeping a hold of your UMDs and playing them on your PSP...?

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

I used to be against playing ps2 games on my ps3 because my reasoning was, my ps2 still works so what's the point. Whilst I love my ps3, I do sometimes find myself missing some ps2 games like Persona 4 and Final Fantasy X. Whilst I now occasionally scowl at my ps3 for not being able to play ps2 games, I am however too lazy to put together my ps2 and play said games...

I don't think the same conundrum applies to the PSP/Vita relationship. it hardly takes a minute to load up a UMD on your psp so I really don't see the point of this. You don't need to set anything up, just have your psp adequately charged and you are set. I get the feeling that like me, whilst people will occasionally hunger for PSP games, people won't play that many of them once they start building up a vita collection. Failing that, you are still allowed to play the psp downloadables you had so...it's not a big deal but this is just me I guess.

The thing is, Sony already established the necessary program (UMD Passport), and their reasoning for not bringing it outside of Japan is the equivalent of David Stern using "Basketball Reasons" as a reason to not allow a trade. There has to be a bigger reason than this as to why they won't bring the program over.

Just think if PS2 games were already available on the PSN network and Sony did a PS2 Passport program allowing Japanese gamers to cheapily buy their games on the store. However anyone outside of Japan will still have to buy them at full price because "It wouldn't be worth it." in Sony's eyes.

I wonder what all the gaming press will say once the PS Vita plays all those Android games that are apparently better that what the Vita has to offer?
