Well just because you were great in the past does not mean your forever great.

Italy is the root of the most powerful empire in history, The Roman Empire.
However Italy has been a joke country for a while now. However with Grown up leadership taking charge, things appear will change.

The problem with these countries, Portugal, Spain, Italy and Greece is the govt is too large but a country that does not generates a far lower level of tax revenue then the Northern European Countries.

The Scandinavians can give all these services as they tax their citizens to death.

Totally off topic here, but do you really consider the Roman Empire to be more powerful than the British at it's height?

Lol huge oversight in my part.

Nonetheless if you make a list those two two likley be in top three.

Romans empires was not really large but it controlled many old powerful empire and areas (Greece, Egypt, Holy Land) and had a massive influence on Western civilization.

British pretty much dominated the world from Waterloo to WW1.

Big question is why are you guys even debating Roman Empire vs British Empire when it is clear that the Mongols had the largest land empire?

Romans would definitely be top three, the only others I can think of were the Americans and Russians, but they didn't really have empires in the traditional sense, just regions of influence that covered almost the whole world.

That territory is about equal in size to Canada + Australia + India, the British had a larger empire

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mongol_Empire

"It is commonly referred to as the largest contiguous empire in the history of the world. At its greatest extent it spanned 9,700 km (6,000 mi), covered an area of 24,000,000 km2 (9,300,000 sq mi),[1][2][3][4] 16% of the Earth's total land area, and held sway over a population of 100 million."

I will argue that what the Mongols did is more impressive empire than what the British accomplished.  One the Mongols usually faced opponents with similar technology or greater than them.  The Mongols had superior tactics.  The British mainly just took advantage of natives with superior technology (guns, and awesome ships).  The British tactics for the most part not were too impressive.  Sure some battles they showed some very cunning tactics but for the most part it was line up and shoot or bring in the cannons.  The Mongols however used deception and usually fooled almost all their opponents into thinking they were retreating.  They didn't always use this tactic but they used it a decent amount (especially in Europe).  Kind of hard to reach your opponent when they are on horse backing up and firing off shots every so often.

Anyways moving off of tactics and onto the actual land of the empires. Did the British control more land?  Perhaps but I would argue that controlling a contiguous empire is highly more effective then being spread out all over the globe.  What happens when you settle colonies in foreign lands.  Eventually the people start associating themselves as an individual nation and not belonging to the motherland due to the long distance relationship.  Good examples would be USA and Carthage.  Before Carthage become an empire they were a Phoenician founded city.  I know this was unnecessary long and drawn out but I will not let you win an argument putting the British ahead of the Mongols.  Do the British deserve respect? Yes but the Mongols deserve more in terms of military accomplishments.  Besides it is sad that Khan never really lost a battle ever.

Basically, if a Mongolian ever faced a British troop during that time period they would destroy them.

I apologize for the off topic rant and I will self enforce a 10 hour ban on myself.

Just want to say this, cause i see it thrown around alot and isnt true.

No one "gave" money to greece. All of it were loans with interest.

The "giving"part were when EU didnt charge interest rates of 20% and took 5% i believe.

Greece are only guilty for pushing the situation but i dont live there nor know the situation the country is in internally.

Greece shouldn't be selling themselves out to other countries. I'd like to see them declare bankruptcy and Force creditors to settle for pennies on the dollars. Then maybe banks will learn their lessons and stop leveraging assets at ridiculous multiples.

The world needs a serious reset button pushed even if war is the only way to make it happen.

Mongol easily is in the top 5 and I would put at number 3 behind British and Roman.

Each of the three are superior in different ways
.

Jesus Christ Monkey balls, Greece truly is in the shitter huh?
