I think there will always be Half-Life and Halo games. Tomb Raider and Sonic looked to be out for the count, but they bounced back. There's room in peoples hearts for more than Nintendo.

Yeah I agree. Still not sure about the future of Half-Life (though as it seems to be 6+ years between major releases I guess there wouldn't have to be many games released for Freeman to reach 30)

What I was saying is that while I do think Sonic/Croft/Chief will last a long while yet... Mario literally won't die unless Nintendo does, wheras I think the people behind franchises like Halo and Half-Life will move on.

Halo is for a teen to adult audience as far as concept of character. It doesnt have the staying power of Mario.

I don't think it is possible to have another series that is creative-content based (rather than simulation based), has maintained as high and consistent in terms of quality, is released as regularly and has survived as long as the Super Mario series. While many series may end up surviving as long as Mario, I be most of them will have long periods between releases or have had a string of poor quality games.

I haven't read most of it, but the title of the thread is whether characters from now will still be relevant in 30 years, ie equalling what Mario has done so far.

People spend more time as Adults than children. I have a special place in my heart for Mario, but Master Chief appeals to me just a strongly, but in a different way. It's possible for both to be loved and last. Although I will say that because Halo/Half-Life/etc. is story diven and Mario/Zelda/etc. retell and reinvent that characters like Master Chief and Gorden Freeman may actualy die and be replaced while Mario and Link will live on as reincarnations of themselves.
