Forums - Sony - Metal Gear Solid 4....what's so great about it? [Spoilers]

Too bad I'm french and can't use proper english cause I would have crushed the OP.

You didn't even mention neither the amazing soundtrack nor the smooth & enhanced gameplay from MGS3, nor the great ending.

Instead you speak of little flaws in the scenario, and I agree, it's not a perfect game.

You don't like run and gun ? Fine, just go stealth on Big Boss Hard.

Same goes for the cutscenes : skip'em. Personnaly, I loved'em and never got bored.

No variety ? infiltrating in the middle of a battlefield, boss fights, searching for Naomi, bike chase, hand combat versus Ocelot, Metal Gear Rex piloting, micro-wave corridor, ... Plus, speaking of variety, this MGS makes you visit more places than any other MGS.

Lack of Easter Eggs/Codecs ? There are. Lots of unlockable content, easter eggs (crop circle, Rose boobs, and I can't get into more specific since the last time I played the game was in 2009). Previous MGS were critizised for their too long codec scenes.

Well my weak english writting skills are exhausted now :p

100% agree with the op. The game was complete and utter shit, nothing about it was good. I hated it from start to finish, definitely the first and last Metal Gear Solid game I'll ever play. And don't give me shitty excuses like 'you need to play the others to appreciate 4', nah, it was just a bad game, I played Deus Ex: Human Revolution without playing any of the previous games and I still thought that was brilliant, in fact Deus Ex: HR deserves the sales and critical acclaim that MGS4 undeservedly achieved.

Of course, the above is my opinion, if you somehow liked it, good for you... I'm not here to argue.

Completly agree with you on the underlined part. Hell I couldn't finish the damn game.

I agree with most of the points in the OP. MGS4 was made for the casual MGS fans who make up 90% of the MGS fanbase, they probably never considered or recognized a single one of those points brought up in the OP after playing MGS4. As long as MGS4 had Snake and not a wtf ending like MGS2, the game would be accepted by the majority MGS fanbase. I believe Kojima intentionally wrote MGS4 the way he did to find a way out of the series without having to deal with death threats from fans again. However, I did find Peace Walker to be an exceptional MGS game story and gameplay wise.

I agree with most all your points. A lot of those elements involving would have been fine for me if they eliminated some of the mistakes in the story. I didn't find nanomachines to be that big of a deal, it's probably the laziest plot device in the series. But if the developments of the characters were great besides that, it wouldn't be that big of a deal for me. I was kind of amazed that this game mostly got a pass, compared to other big sequels this gen, that did not.

Here's a couple more that bugged me.
1) To me it seemed Raiden being a Super Ninja was silly and a response for the people that didn't like Raiden in MGS2. Maybe he was a bit whiny and not as bad ass as Snake. But, I thought he was a good fleshed out character (not everyone can be a bad ass), and this game just made him a bad character.
2) Meryl and Akiba, I mean after MGS1, who wanted meryl to marry the guy who was a one line joke of diarrhea. I understand, that Meryl didn't need a happy ending with snake. But, making many peoples favorite girl in the series marry diarrhea boy is just unsatisfying particularly with the dialogue it took to get there.
3) I felt the the game shoehorned in characters from the previous games, and essentially ruined them. in some form.

I personally gave this game a 7 or 7.5 out of 10.  Which is still good, because the gamplay there is fun, and if there was a more substantial amount of gameplay I'd give it an 8.5 or 9/10.  Just everything else, and length of gameplay take it down for me.

I see how people like it though. Don't get me wrong. Peacewalker was great, except that the controls were worse than all except for MGS1. Not excited for a sequal after MGS4 though in plotline.

I agree with everything you said, OP. I was disappointed with this game, extremely disappointed. I just got the MGS HD collection and I'm enjoying MGS3, it's reminding me how much I loved the previous MGS games. In MGS4 the lack of codec conversations, lame boss fights that have nothing to do with the story, lack of Easter eggs, how you can pause and buy more bullets. You pretty much pointed out every problem I have with the game.

@ishiki. I agree with you on Raiden. I thought he was a great character in MGS2 and I hated what they did to him in MGS4. Turning him into a ninja wasn't cool, just lame. In MGS2, you got to see how awesome Snake was through someone else's eye.

It is still a good game though, but the worst MGS game and definitely not a 10/10. I definitely don't want a sequel to MGS4.

Mirson thank you. Thank you. I've been wondering why MGS4 was so loved.

Harsh reviews.

The OP has many valid points but if you played the game in 2008 your opinion would be much different. The game has not aged well besides presentation.

I'd take MGS4 over 95% of the FPS shooters pumped out every year

I'm not going to try to change your opinion of the game but if you want to understand why Ocelot faked being Liquid and why things went like it did you have to read these articles:

Yes I'm lazy but those explain everything, MGS4 was as good as an innecessary sequel could be, Kojima Productions did its best and frankly is quite mean that some have call it uther shit like all the hard work and years put into suddenly means nothing but well the internet was created to complaint (and watch porn).

I don't think anyone loves MGS4 more than the other ones in the series. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely loved MGS4, but it was largely forgettable. The only thing really great about the game was the gameplay, I don't think I've ever felt as in controll of a character as in that game.

It's definitely better than Peace Walker though. *shudder*

It's have the best ending off all videogames. and the best cinematics + soundtracks.
It's amazing.
uncharted 3 is good, deus ok, hitman.. zZz... but MGS 4 is awesome.

Uncharted 3 has much better cinematics, they are actually interesting and actually progress the story. But, MGS4's soundtrack is amazing.

That's because Uncharted 3 has the most shallow, completely face value and flash story in recent years. I'm guessing you think that the Star Wars prequels have great and interesting stories as well.
