They SUK at advertising their games, it sickens me >.>

At least they do a better job advertising their games than they have advertising the Vita. Credit where credit's due.

@blkfish92 Sony just sucks at advertising period. Where's Kevin Butler when you need him?

not looking so hot are we Sony?

what are they going to do , they already butchered the launch of the vita . worst then nintendo did with 3ds . and now they wanna make less games? well so be it not going to help much .

after all the biggest fault with vita is it needs better games!

besides uncharted wipeout asphalt and (maybe little deviants) i don't see much of worth in that line up.

im not into sonic any more and rayman is already available elsewhere. little big planet and mod nation never appealed to me . the only series i think sony could do that would do well is granturismo what they really need is to do what they did during the ps1 era .

Less games???? please dont go Microsoft route and release like 1 or no exclusive for a whole year and for god sakes dont you dare start focusing on shovel ware and dance games seriously....=.=

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception is selling considerably well and was only released 3 months ago. Microsoft rely on the same old franchises which boosts their profits as they do not take the plunge of seeing through a new franchise. Even Nintendo try to experiment with new franchises.

heavy bundling is what helping uncharted sell

Advertising plays a large part in the low sales of many PS3 exclusives, but from what I've experienced through research and a lot of anecdotal evidence, the main reason behind the low sales of some PS3 games is a lack of good combination of quality and appeal. Games like Uncharted and God of War are high quality and appeal to the masses, hence, the higher sales.

But then you have a game like say Killzone which is a well-made, quality game. But it lacks appeal. It's not very accessible. You try to get some new people to play it and they feel lost & uncomfortable. It's too hardcore to be super successful on the PS3. Or you take something like LBP, which is clever and innovating, but most PS3 fans think it's too kiddy. Or you take a game like SOCOM 4 which is just low quality.

At least that's from what I experienced. Most accessible, non-niche, games do sell well. Sony can make a lot more blockbusters. They just gotta make them the right way.

As a matter of fact where the hell is Kevin Butler?!?! Haven't seen him in awhile.

An article like this, say, 13 months ago would've been completely laughed at on this site. The number of exclusives for the PS3 made the 360 look downright pitiful, right? Those were the chants, ¿verdad? Yet here we are with even Sony themselves saying what some insightful ones have been saying for a long time: a high number of exclusives isn't THE answer. Hopefully now we can all acknowledge that and just move forward on that subject.

And don't get me started on the the number of 1st party studios argument ...

To be fair, many people thought that most of them would be AAA games as well, so their argument wasn't unreasonable.

Playstation LifeStyle

Despite being one of the best publishers in the industry, and managing to bring out critical hit after critical hit, Sony has failed to produce huge chart-topping games like Gears of War and Halo. Outside of Gran Turismo, Sony’s IPs have yet to hit the big time, partially due to poor marketing – something that Sony’s Worldwide Studios President has taken notice of.

When questioned by GameInformer why Microsoft were able to sell just one game in 2011, Gears of War 3 (although, to be fair, they did have other games), and it still managed to sell more than all of Sony’s products combined, Shuhei Yoshida admitted that their increased lineup stretched marketing funds and focus (emphasis added):

It’s a combination of many things. First, we have to be very honest about our games’ quality as well. We love our games, but we can point out many issues when you look at the titles individually.

Another thing is focus. When you have ten games coming out in a year compared to two or three, how much focus you get from our business and marketing side is very hard. From a portfolio side, we were very excited about the games we had last year, but we probably diluted support for each title.

He was then asked whether Sony could end up producing less games. After talking about Sony’s love for new IPs he closed with an admission that the company should develop fewer games and support them more (emphasis added):

It’s easy to say, “Yeah, let’s make three games a year.” But game development is dynamic. You cannot plan to do that. You already have to have a certain number of games in the pipeline hoping they hit in a certain year. We love working on new IPs. It’s really hard to predict when these games get finished.

It’s a challenge, but I think we could and probably should be focused on a smaller number of titles so each one gets the best support.

With titles like The Last Guardian - which sadly is unlikely to sell well – being stuck in development for years, and games like Resistance 3 failing to pass a million sales, Sony’s plan to release a huge number of quality games doesn’t seem to be working for them. And, when you factor in the fact that Microsoft has managed to top the NPD six months running with the help of a fewer number or far higher marketed products, it’s understandable why the cash-strapped company might want to release fewer games. Unfortunately, while a drop in Sony-produced content might be good for their bank balance, it certainly isn’t good for gamers – titles like Heavy Rain and Flower would never have been funded by a different publisher.

With the PlayStation 4′s release drawing ever closer, it’ll be interesting to see which route Sony decides to adopt – tons of games, little marketing or a few games with tons of marketing. I know which one I’d prefer.

Hmmm you didnt mention Uncharted or little Big Planet or killzone in this article?
