Forums - Sony - Before the Vita--which PSP games are "Must own" titles?

I plan to grab a Vita next month along with Gravity Daze so I guess it's official.  My time with the PSP is coming to an end.  I'll probably sell it or give it away or something.  Who knows.  Well, before that day comes, I'm grabbing probably five PSP games (downloadable, of course) so I can have one final gaming orgy with my Sony portable powerhouse.  I just downloaded Metal Gear Solid 1 (PS1 Classics) a few hours ago.  I think I'm going to go with the two God of War games, one of the Grand Theft Autos, and Jak and Daxter today.  These are titles I've had my eye on for a long time but never really got around to purchasing.

Anyway, I'd like to know what your fondest memories of the PSP were and, of course, what are your personal "Must own" PSP titles.  I may be inspired to download it today, too!

Me:

1.  Hot Shots Tennis: Get a Grip!:  I had so much fun with this title that it was insane.  Easy to pick up and play.  Great gameplay mechanics.  Charming graphics, humor, and storyline.  A lot of collectable stuff.  If the upcoming Mario Tennis game for the 3DS is half as engaging, I will be impressed.  This game was perfect for the PSP.

2.  Final Fantasy Tactics:  The War of the Lions :  A re-release of a game I may have logged in 100 hours on for the original PS1.  Well over a decade since the launch of the original and it's still my favorite strategy game.  It's not for everybody but for those who try it, it can easily consume your entire life.  Even when I was home and I had my HD consoles in front of me, I was always playing this game.  It's a hard one to put down.

3.  Resistance Retribution:  Not as amazing, now.  At the time, this game was like playing a console game on a portable.  Sony went all out on production values with this one.  A great looking, sounding, and playing TPS.  I don't like the console resistance games but this game was great!  I need to finish it one of these days......

4.  Crimson Gem Saga :  The PSP was a haven for great RPG's.  I missed out on quite a bit of them (Persona, why are you still so expensive!?).  One that I was lucky enough to stumble across was Crimson Gem Saga.  The story was routine but what made this game awesome was the branching skill tree that you used to level up your characters.  The humor in this game was great too.  The battle system was pretty standard for an RPG but that was exactly what I wanted.  You don't have to re-invent the wheel for an RPG to be fun.  You just have to do the basics really well.  This game did that.

5.  Little Big Planet :  Didn't have the four player co-op or the same stages as the PS3 version but I enjoyed this portable version much more than its console big brother.  This is one of those PSP games that I can keep going back to for ages.  Sackboy is no Mario but when you're running through those physics based platform worlds, you won't care.  Great game, all around.

In a few weeks, I'll be porting all of these titles to my new Vita.  In the meantime, I just want to say, "Thank you, PSP.  You've served me well."

I also used to use my PSP for porn.

I thought I would never say this, but you have strange tastes.

I thought we were friends. So all this talk about playing Resident Evil: Revelations was just lies on your part? I should have never trusted you.

Nah.  I just dusted off that zombie chick this morning.  Awesome game!  I played as those two goofy fucks this morning and turned the console off.  Even as we speak, I'm firing up Mario Kart 7 for some online practice.  The 3DS is a beast but my PSP was great, too!

Crisis Core, Dissidia Duodecim, Star Ocean 1+2, Final Fantasy 1+2

I enjoyed all of those immensely. 3rd Birthday, VC2 and Peacewalker are also alright.

Birth By sleep was amazing and I'm hoping for a Vita sequel. Peace Walker is perfect metal gear on the go, and Portable ops and ac!d are pretty solid as well. Patapon and the Prinny platformers are great games that can be played in chunks. The port of harvest moon back to nature is sweet, and of course monster hunter is a must own.

You can actually play resistance retribution on your ps3 which fixes the somewhat wonky controls and gives the plot a different twist.

If you are playing 3DS anyway and have already completed the first three episodes of RE:R, then we could at least play the first seven Raid mode stages now. And I mean now. Go online and host a room for friends.

You host and I'll join you.  Mario Kart has been saying "Please wait" for about five minutes, anyway.

Untold Legends.

It make your entire library seem better by comparison. It will also make you appreciate below-average games.

The PSP had so many must own games its hard to confine them to just 5 lol

Games I think are must owns:

1. MGS Portal Ops Plus/Peace Walker, they both are awesome

2. Jeanne d'arc--pure tactical fun with a moving story, level 5 did wonders with this game.

3. Street fighter Alpha 3 MAX

4. Birth by Sleep

5. Hard final choice but I thought that the Syphon Filter series was left for dead, next thing you know we were blessed with Dark Mirror,

1. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker - I'm not generally a fan of media crossovers, but this is how you adapt a popular film franchise into a game. The Monster Hunter-esque flow of the game works really well, the base building is pretty addictive, and the story almost isn't convoluted as fuck. I'm especially impressed with the production value, and with how well the controls work given how stupid a single analog design is for modern games.

2. Valkyria Chronicles 2 - I can't really remember whether the general consensus was that this was better or worse than the original. I also don't really give a fuck. It's awesome.

3. Kenka Bancho: Badass Rumble - Sort of like the poor man's Yakuza. Customize your teenaged hoodlum to your liking - clothes, hairstyle, and moveset - then go out and rape the faces of all the other hoodlums from across the Japan. Fun times.

4. Persona - Loved it on the PS1, and it still holds up incredibly well today. Actually, it may be my favorite of all the Persona games. It feels darker and more occult, and less... J-poppy. I dig that.

5. Ys 7 - I'd written off Ys as being doomed to remakes of remakes of remakes from here on out, so it was pretty shocking when they announced a BRAND NEW FUCKING GAME. Even if I prefer the classic style of the lone Adol hacking his way through hordes of enemies, Ys 7 represents a pretty deft modernization of the series with its party system and faster paced, more complex battles. And the soundtrack is totally up to the Ys standard, which is high as hell.
