I just don't get how people still think Nintendo is the king of exclusives. They certainly were from the NES until the N64, but I think based on the PS2 and PS3 that Sony has surpassed Nintendo in both quality and quanitity of exclusives. I don't know if Sony will ever have a series as big as Mario or Zelda but they certainly try a hell of a lot harder. |
I agree that Nintendo need at least one new IP a generation that is high profile, has the capacity to sell 1.5m plus, is critically acclaimed and appeals to the so called 'hardcore' (for want of a better word) audience. As you said, they can be seen to need the eqivilent of Uncharted, and by that I mean a TPS, but a game that meets the mentioned criteria. Pikmin is probably the last example of that I can think of from Nintendo.
However, the fact remains that Nintendo has made many new IPs in the 7th as well as launching the 8th gen with one, some of which I listed above. However, none fill all the criteria I listed; the likes of Xenoblade Chronicles and Soma Bringer are very well critically recieved, appeal to the so called 'core' and are high profile games, but don't sell anywhere near the amount they deserve. Equally, Wii Sports is the best selling game of all time and is high profile, but appeals to a different audience. It is factually wrong and many would argue ignorant for one to claim that Nintendo doesn't make any new IPs, and I would (controversially) argue that Nintendo should make less; however, they should put more effort, time and resources into each one of their new IPs and create some that fulfil thecriteria I listed earlier.
As for your final paragraph, quality is of course subjective. However I strongly disagree with your view that Sony have a greater quantity of exclusives in the 7th gen. While I have no evidence to hand, I expect that the quantity of 1st and 3rd party exclusives on the DS and Wii collectively outnumber those on the PSP and PS3. This is probably due to the power difference between the Nintendo platforms and the nearest contemporary platform, leading to a reduced number of titles becoming multiplatform.

Ok yeah if that's the case then it would be Nintendo for sure followed by Microsoft and then Sony if we are talking about this gen only. If it's for all time then Sony gets second place as they've been on the market longer.
EDIT: Just read the OP again and it looks like my original point stands seeing as he's pretty much just asking everyone's opinions on it and not keeping it strictly to the number of exclusives and their sales. |
If it's subjective then PC! The only platform generous enough to share inferior versions of its exclusives.
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
Sony published 1259 titles, and sold 546.8 million, According to this site; this is the entire history of Sony's published releases.
http://www.vgchartz.com/gamedb/?name=&publisher=1535&console=&genre=&minSales=0&results=1000
"Super Mario" gets 52 titles, and 285.56 million titles. (51 titles 277 million if you take out the original Mario Kart which has "Super Mario" in the title)
http://www.vgchartz.com/gamedb/?name=Super+Mario&publisher=&console=&genre=&minSales=0&results=1000
Pokemon 63 titles, 208.33 sales
http://www.vgchartz.com/gamedb/?name=Pokemon&publisher=&console=&genre=&minSales=0&results=1000
Mario Kart with 9 titles gets 89.01
3 legendary franchises, 584 million units sold between 122 titles. tens of millions more sales than Sony could manage with 10 times that number of games.
If sales aren't enough, then critical acclaim:
1. N64 The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Nintendo, 1998 97.48%
2. WII Super Mario Galaxy
Nintendo, 2007 97.46%
3. WII Super Mario Galaxy 2
Nintendo EAD Tokyo /Nintendo, 2010 97.12%
Nintendo takes Gold, Silver, and Bronze with the top three all time highest rated games: http://www.gamerankings.com/browse.html
Nintendo - with the longevity and power of their franchises, with the highest selling games and the highest critical ratings of any games, and 25 years of incredible critical and market success on Super Mario alone - is the undisputed King of the Industry's exclusive franchises.
I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.
I think the poll already fully answers the question, but really, is there any real competition to Nintendo's IPs?
Just a quick look at only Nintendo's IPs selling power, removing the big bundlers (Wii Sports/Play/Resort) and you clearly see dominance. Hell, even compared to nearly all multi-platform 3rd party games Nintendo IPs obliterate them.
Now, that's not to say there aren't gems out there too... Uncharted and Gears as absolutely fantastic.

But the number of quality exclusies on PS1-PS3 are far bigger then all Nintendo consoles combined. Honestly, wich game did you enjoy on the Wii last year besides Zelda? I didn't even like it, the motion controls suck. Last good Zelda was Windwaker imo wich released 9 years ago.
Besides, I like the variety of games in Sony consoles line-up

That's a fairly big statement to make without posting any evidence; and when most people don't agree with you.

And according to this list on game rankings - listing the top 50 highest rated games- Nintendo leads with 9 exclusives against 4 Sony exclusives. In fact, with 6 exclusive titles on the list on Microsoft systems, Sony is actually third according to critical acclaimed exclusives.
Also, in terms of last years games, I did buy a lot for the Wii: Donkey Kong Country Returns, Xenoblade: Chronicles, Just Dance 3, Rayman Origins, Kirby's Dreamland, Zelda Skyward Sword (and probably more); but also the Dragon Quest 6 remake, Ocarina Ocarina of Time 3D, Radiant Historia, Pokemon White, Mario Kart 7, Super Street Fighter 4, Steel Diver, Super Mario Land 3D, Ghost Trick (from the maker of Phoenix Wright), Professor Layton Last Spector, Cave Story 3D, Starfox 64 3D, and probably more. My PS3 purchases include Assassin's Creed Revelations, Red Dead Redemption, Final Fantasy 13-2, and LA Noire - while I do enjoy them to some extent (except Red Dead Redemption, which I can't stand), I have been disappointed by all of them - and felt the Nintendo games I bought last year were both more fun and more satisfying than everything I have bought on PS3 since it launched (not including downloadable classic titles).

So by this aruement you could say that new is always better? is that it? wouldn't sales numbers indicate how good an IP is? or critical reception? I do agree that nintendo needs to come up with something new (except the Wii titles), but that doesn't make their current IP's any less good. "The King of Exclusives" - judging by sales alone Nintendo wins it by far. And to be honest, Nintendo is far more creative with their IP's than Sony/Microsoft (I'm thinking Super Mario 64, Zelda: OoT, Mario Galaxy etc) - taking something old and making it new.
And, I'd like to quote Mark here: "they try a hell a lot harder" - that's loser talk ;) only if you're second you try harder - and still Nintendo dominates...
