tiny market where Sony decided to burn any profits by buying market share, PS3's were routinely given away.

its the equivalent of giving away about 2.8m PS3's in the US.

its amazing you bring that up,yet you had no issue with MS giving away Xboxes for buying laptop in the Us or cellphone in the UK.

Guess how I got my PS3?  free with a phone.... check my post history.

The UK phone market has that for all consoles.  Oh and guess what the deal on amazon was for vaio laptops last year... yep.. a free PS3, these all pale into insignifance to the Aus deal.

These types of deals are copmmon, but they are all small beer compared to the AUS Sony TV deal.  It is 14% of the ps3 "sold" there.

So what, that's my point. At least they don't hide it. Everyone buys markeshare'. There was no need for your comment at all.

I think here there is... 14% is exceptional.  Like I said, its the equivalent of 2.8m give away PS3s in the US.

and Im not sure how you can hide giveaways...

what are the numbers for how many Xbox were  giving away last year in the US or UK due to promotions?

nobody knows... just like they dont know how many PS3's were gven away in similar deals.

Its probably insignificant as a % and is probably why in this case it has been mentioned due to the size of it.

look if you dont think 14% is a remarkable giveaway rate then fine, but I do... I dont want to argue about it.

14% does sound like a high giveaway rate. When was this said?

According to Sony, the PlayStation 3 console achieved a 24.85 percent year-on-year increase in unit sales in 2011, selling 1.27 million units at retail and a further 210,000 units in promotions, and achieving the highest unit sales out of all the home consoles in 2011.

210k from 1.48m is 14.2%

(by the way, thats lifetime, not just 2011)

Ahh ok. Thanks for the info, and the edits. Ye 14% is a high percentage but it's not like they were given away for nothing. You still would have to spend a fair bit on a bravia tv to get the ps3.

So how much is 360 in Australia?

That's the data I have...

2008LT: 537k
2009LT: 814k

2009 =  814  -  537   = 277k
2010 = 20% over 2009 (my assuption 20% is just for hardware but I guess it's hardware + software too) = 332k

* 2010 sales: "revealing only that the Xbox 360 experienced its biggest year to date in 2010 and saw a 20 percent increase in total sales over 2009."

2010LT: 1,146k (inacurate if the * is for hardware + software)

There are no data about %increase in 2011... just MS said "the publisher's Xbox 360 platform--including both hardware and software--was the only platform in the Australian market to show growth in 2011, growing more than 5 percent in the last year."

They just give us the grow for hardware and software together.

"free" and "with phone" doesn't come together ;)

Just because price is cleverly hidden into monthly plan it doesn't mean you get it for free.

So likely around 1.4m on Aus ?

Looks like its a tie between Ps3 and 360 there.

3DS is going to destroy everything this year in Australia. And don't act like the last 5 years of Wii domination in Australia didn't exist, please.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Actually, phone companies have been offering "free gift" with your contract for about 4 years now, they beef up the price though if you add it, so it's not really free, and it ends up costing you about 1.5/2x more than the original price would have been if  you just went out and purchased it.

360 still has a higher install base overall.

Keep trying Sony.

What so sales don't matter, it's now the install base? Wow.. Desperate?

Install base is a result from sales. But your right.

360 still has more shipped and higher install base then PS3 lifetime.

PS3 is the one clawing its way from 3rd place, no desperation from 360 camp :)

Install base is number of consoles in consumers homes, not only sales. Except for MS, where install base means shipped

I vaguely remmember someone posting (with a source). That one of the MS officials being interviewed said that Intstall base means sold to consumers to them.

Yay!!!

Like "Microsoft revealed that there are over 66 million Xbox users worldwide"... that's install base no?
