Interesting indeed.

That is Switzerland though ;)

And the Dutch

It's also interesting because downloading content for personal use is aparently legal in Switzerland so you would think that they would be less inclined to buy content...

Hmm... I had only heard that Austria did that. Interesting to hear it's more widespread.

And since they pay for the stuff they download through their taxes, I'm surprised they don't choose to get more bang for the buck...

Piracy equals some % of real lost sales without ANY money ever going to content creators.

Used games equals some % of money flowing back to creators as someone initially buys the game as well as the seller often using money from sold game to buy another new game.

In both cases we cannot argue 100% either way. You can't argue piracy would have 100% loss or gain. As there is some number in between that would have actually bought the game while many would not. Additionally, you can't argue that every used game sale equals to another new game sale as many times that sale will just be spent on something else the seller needed or wanted.

However, only used sales has any possibility and real world evidence to show some % of money does go to the content creators.

Used games is still a game sold. Piracy is zero...

That's actually a great difference. Once someone starts pirating he may never buy a single new game. So yeah, pirating got my vote.

The report states that around a third of Swiss citizens over 15 years old download pirated music, movies and games from the Internet. However, these people don’t spend less money as a result because the budgets they reserve for entertainment are fairly constant. This means that downloading is mostly complementary.

The other side of piracy, based on the Dutch study, is that downloaders are reported to be more frequent visitors to concerts, and game downloaders actually bought more games than those who didn’t. And in the music industry, lesser-know bands profit most from the sampling effect of file-sharing.

The Swiss report then goes on to review several of the repressive anti-piracy laws and regulations that have been implemented in other countries recently, such as the three-strikes Hadopi law in France. According to the report 12 million was spent on Hadopi in France this year, a figure the Swiss deem too high.

So pirates spend the same amount on on content, and in fact buy more games than non pirats. People who buy used on the other hand spend less on new games because it eats into their budget for entertainment....

Interesting indeed.

Where piracy is actual more rampant then elsewhere.

So if anyting you'd expect negative effects to be more pronounced since the negative mental costs of piracy would be lower.
