It is a little too soon to count the PSVITA out on the race. It is doing pretty bad in Japan at the moment and may even go to single digits. That could affect if Sony wants to bring out the PSVITA in EU and the US yet. If it's not doing well in Japan why would they want to take a chance with America? Especially seeing how the PSP did in America compared to the large DS sales.
It could come back to life or it could not, one thing I think won't happen is that it will pass the 3DS in terms of sales.
We just have to wait a little longer.

It was also predicted that PS1 sales would come to a halt when the Nintendo 64 was released. These prediction are pointless.

The Vita needed 3 things to be successful: A competitive price, a good games lineup at launch and advertisement. Lots and lots of advertisement.

....

This is compounded by a lack of any sort of advertisment for the console outside of gaming websites and magazines. I hae yet to see a single advert for the Vita, and very little pushing from retailers (no midnight launches in any Game or Gamestation here in the UK, for example), could easily lead to the average consumer to believe this new console is simply another PSP with an extra analogue stick. A much greater marketing campaign will need to be launched in the UK in order for the Vita to be even slightly competitive at launch.

Is he a retard ? You don't start big advertisement for mainstream customer months before release. You want to start it shortly before launch to make the most out of it.

Its way too early to be making that prediction.

The Vita has much harder competition than the PSP. The PSP had only the NDS.

The Vita has the now enormous successfull 3DS as competitor and the Smartphones&Tablet-PCs. And on top of that the difference in graphics between 3DS and Vita are not as apparent as between PSP and DS.

To be honest: I think the Vita will not be in the market two years from now. And after reading about the horrible financial status of Sony it could be that Sony will be history in a two years too.

I think it will die, with Sony model "CONSOLE EXPERIENCE ON PORTABLE" it won't succeed as big publishers won't waste their best ideas on a portable, whith the market getting tougher and tougher and scarce on new ideas.

@rrrnearr True that. Why would I want a console experince on a handheld? I want a handheld game on a handheld system point and simple.

On the polls, it's pretty much half and half with the doom and non-doom. So far we haven't heard anything about the Vita toping pre-orders or anything. On the best sellers section on Amazon, the 3G Vita launch bundle is number 17, but dropping. And the Wi-Fi model is below Resident Evil: Revelations, which is at number 19.

If there's a market for it, big publishers will pursue that option. If the Vita could get something like PSP had with Monster Hunter, sales will skyrocket (in Japan at least if something similar to MH; they need a worldwide appeal).

Sony did do a few things right so far. Them making sure that every single retail game is available for download from the get go is something that should've been done with the PSP (especially the Go) once the PSN went into full bloom. They made sure they had a great line-up at launch, with something for everyone.

It doesn't need to be number 1 in order to be successful. I think Sony learned their lesson now and we will see a steady stream of games being pumped out throughout the year. With the PSP, I think Sony was successful in creating their own niche for themselves.

It is kind of peculiar that Sony thought to take a blue ocean approach to the handheld market.

Many people kept saying handhelds are only for casual gamers, but then Sony comes along and carves out a market niche of 72 million with mostly non-causal games.

I believe the Vita will do better than the PSP in both quality/quantity of game library and global lifetime hardware/software sales.

Which was exactly my point, the publishers have to create that market(we all know Sony alone can't, Sony isn't Nintendo), and it's too risky to bet a great idea on portable.
