I don't think it's necessarily fair to blame the voters. At the end of the day, they are given the illusion of choice, when they don't really have any. How can you vote for freedom and prosperity when your choices are Obama and McCain? You could argue that they had a choice in Paul, but there was near zero media coverage of him. Even now, all media coverage is twisted to be as negative as possible.
The "free" media (ie - the WWW) is changing this, but it's a gradual change, and the old media outlets still have a lot of influence there. But if you look at the effect that the free media has had on Paul between this and last election, you can see that its power is rapidly growing. Even in South Carolina, where Paul came in fourth with 13%... that's still a significant increase on his 3% win just four years ago.
