Forums - Gaming - OXM: Dear PC graphics snobs - you're holding gaming back

Bad games are the only thing that can hold gaming back.

I don't agree with the article.

Sounds like the author has more of a beef with the obnoxious vocal minority PC gaming pundits rather than developer support of PC gaming. One really doesn't have anything to do with the other.

The notion that fewer games will be developed due to the inevitable progress in gaming graphics is laughable and overlooks the growing market of budget games which do exactly the opposite of take up more developer resources.

At bare minimum, it should be acknowledged that past a certain point in the hardware lifecycle of any console, the limitations start to outweigh the merits of familiarity. New hardware means fewer constraints for developers interested in pushing the envelope.

Sure, you can play your PC on your sofa.

But at what cost Pezus?

PC's for gaming are more hassle than they are worth.

Upgrade this, modify that, blah blah.

Sure, they're more hassle but some would say that's a plus because it enables you to have far more choices ;)

In a way, but it is also kind of useless

I bought GTA IV recently, it works runs smoothly on my computer, but crashes whenever I hit anything after a couple of minutes, even with the graphics turned down, and this is because the game doesn't support Windows 7 apparently... (well at least, R* won't help me because of that)

I also got Dead Space, I started playing it, it crashed...

I think you get where I am going.

Don't get me wrong, I am actually am playing PC games more since I got myself a wired Xbox 360 controller and am planning on building myself a nice gaming PC to replace my laptop. I will still be a console gamer to enjoy the easy nature and lovely ecosystem, but Steam sales provide me with plenty of beautiful PC entertainment. Also, looking at the screens from newer PC games makes me REALLY want next gen consoles, yes Skyrim is great to play, but it would be better if it was prettier!

That is if you don't know what you're doing.  I prefer my PC.  Everything loads faster, I absolutely hate the loading times on consoles.  I also enjoy customizing my PC.  Consoles are what the publishers want.  They want a closed platform where they can continue to feed the uninformed consumer piles of crap.  There really is no advantage to having a console other than maybe price.  Even then, I made my PC for the price of 400 dollars and I can run games better than consoles.  On top of that, I can browse the web while gaming, I can have a conversation with someone easily, I can avoid paying for multiplayer, I can use the lovely service of steam, I can have better voice chat, I can play high end PC exclusives.  All the while having an Xbox 360 and Wii.  I am gonna own a Wii U when it comes out too.  Considering the next Sony and Microsoft console will only be about 20% more powerful than the Wii U, think PS2 vs Gamecube levels.  Yes the gamecube was 20% more powerful than the PS2 hardware wise.  Didn't stop the PS2 from topping the charts did it now?   I will be able to play most of the console exclusives I enjoy on the Wii U, while being able to play my PC games.  Win/Win in my opinion owning a Gaming PC and consoles.

I disagree... Bad games are "Mistakes"... Mistakes that other devs could learn from.

For those who have time to invest in their PC's, and those who have the money, then more power to you.

Depending on the site i'm working on i sometimes take my console(s) to work with me.

Sure, a decent PC can run most games, but the constant upgrading and all that nonsense would just get on my tits to be honest. (i work 12 hour shifts, throw in 3 hours travel there and back and i'm left with 9 hours for myself before sleep, food ect)

My laptop now stays strictly at home, whenever i start taking them with me on my travels they conk out after 12-18 months.

I'm pleased for those of you who like you're PC gaming, but it will just never be my cup of tea.

Oh, I understand.  I like owning both a gaming PC and a console though.  Allows me to play all the games I want.  There are PC exclusives I want, and there are console exclusives I want.  I play multiplatform games on the PC due to the higher framerates giving me more smooth gameplay, and less loading screens.   I'm not that old, but so far I've lived through 2 console generations of cartridges and 2 generations of disc.  I wish there weren't so many issues with cartridges though, Id love to have a flash media based console where games load at the drop of a dime.  I didn't play the PS1 until sometime in the mid 2000s, but I didn't miss much from my proespective.  I guess you could call me a big Nintendo fan, having grown up on the SNES, N64, Gameboy, Gameboy Color, and Gamecube.  Heck, Nintendo hid the gamecubes loading screens really well so I didn't notice them all that much.  I've always loved Nintendo games, so a PC+Nintendo Console is my ultimate combonation...  kind of rambled, sorry.   Though with your time restraints no point in investing money in something bulky and hard to travel with.

Saying i couldn't give a toss was harsh.

The more ways for people to enjoy games the better.

Maybe, just maybe one day when i have the time (not likely till retirement at this rate lol) i may just go and see what all the fuss of PC gaming is about.

I don't understand the article, Skyrim doesn't even look that good on PC and people are still working on texture mods, the only thing standing on it's own on PC right now is BF3, that's the only game that rapes everything else on a graphical fidelity level especially when in the midst of pure chaos. I need more experiences like BF3 MP on PC, that's for sure, rest of the games don't matter as much since it's generally minor upgrades to the console version until fan made high rest texture packs come out, even then, they don't increase poly counts so meh~

Oh and course the control of your choice, I can use anything I want on PC, consoles can't offer that option. I mean fuck, you can even use PSEye and Move, Wiimote, Kinect, and all that shit on PC if you want, not that I'd ever want to look like a retard these days outside of playing Skyward Sword which is an excellent game but... if you are not a complete PC nub that buys shitty parts, it's much more flexible.

Things crash when you have shitty hardware and bad drivers, if you want a gaming PC, do research and don't buy shitty parts and you won't crash as much unless a game has really shitty coders behind them, like fucking Batman: AC with their broken ass DX11 implementation, yes, it runs in DX11, just like shit, but at least it runs right? No, that's not OK, fuck you Rocksteady, I could have played that game a month ahead on my PS3 if I wanted to play it in DX9, at least PhysX is kinda cool I guess....
