Forums - Microsoft - Rumor: Microsoft Points to be phased out by end of year

AnalogHype

The website “Inside Mobile Apps” reported today that Microsoft is supposedly looking towards getting rid of their cumbersome Microsoft Points System in favor of regional currency. This change comes in light of Microsoft’s urge to compete with the Android Marketplace and Apple’s AppStore. Getting rid of the points system found on Windows Phone, and Xbox Live would allow users a less hectic way of keeping track of how much “money” they have in their account. Those days where you have to calculate how much money you’ll have to spend to purchase X amount of points? Gone, and good riddance. If this rumor is true, then Microsoft should be getting rid of their points system by the end of 2012.

If I can buy cards with an amount of money on it then no problem but if those cards dissapear it would be kind of sad...Certainly don't want to use my bank card.

I hope it's true. I never liked the idea of points instead of cash. Who cares if something is the same amount of MS points in every region? You still have to buy those points at the different rates depending on the value of your local currency.

What happens if you have points left over on your account then? I won't be happy if they just disappear.

Thank you! I'd much rather just have the price in a currency I can relate to!

ohhh no this is huuge shit! i bought my points here in germany from no clue which country on ebay and other sites. i had to pay like 32€ for 4200 points last time i bought them if they will kill this system i will have to pay 50€ for the same... this will be an increase of over 50% for me!

man this sucks hard i won't buy some games then because i don't want to pay the same in euro then you have to pay in dollar. i don't want to pay 15€ for a little arcade game i can't sell anymore after.my buy which means it would cost the same for me like buying a retail game and selling it after two months or so...

btw (can't edit my post above with smartphone) don't you americans get the points for less as well on ebay and so on as you would have to pay as “official“ price? so you have to pay more as well in the future don't you? how can this make all of you happy wtf? sry if i'm wrong and it's only here in europe.

Points on Win Phone 7?? It always uses £s when I buy stuff.

This will be fine if we have Card with money instead of points that i can buy in retail... i need that cards, i wont ever use a bank card on anything.

yeah I can't believe why no one mentioned that before.
Prices will be much closer if not identical to the RRP. Microsoft points were an awesome invention.

Now imagine if you can't buy Gold subscription cards anymore, but instead you absolutely need to buy them via Xbox Live. Microsoft will be happy for sure.
