Those were SW totals at the end of 2011.

not necessarily if you consider that xbox 360 was selling software almost a year prior to the ps3's launch

360 had a year head start in America in Japan and a year and a half in Europe. Considering they both sold ~150m software last year, I'd say the difference is almost all because of the headstart. |
It's simple, all you have to do is take the software figure for both and divide them by how many consoles they have sold.
360: 600,821,693/64,165,235 = 9.364
PS3: 509,632,679/60,959,159 = 8.360

27m extra SW 360 sold whilst PS3 wasn't on the market.

You really have to compare the final year of Xbox 360 sales though, not the first. Later years are going to have bigger sales than earlier years, and its the 360's sixth year that makes the difference.

which is irrelevent. Its not like the headstart will magically disappear when all is said and done. The 360 came out a year early and had an extra year in the market and it will always have that extra year. Time will tell what that means towards the longetivity of the console but it's no one's fault but sony's that it joined the race late. And considering 360's software lead has been growing every year, you can't even say the ps3 is catching up.

Not really.
From the point when PS3 and 360 were both on the market for the first time, 360 has sold more SW.
PS3 hasn't had a hard time selling more HW in that timeframe, so it's obvious SW is lagging behind.
