Maybe you should do the following:

Manually confirm every account that has been created to date. That way anybody who has already made an account in the past when they could sign in without activating their account can still log in.

Then change the create a new account so there's bold text that says the account has to be activated before they can log in. That way there won't be anyone who creates an account from now on that will be wondering why they can't log in.

I did read and follow this thread ioi but I think I may have used an old email address and now when I request my password it doesn't connect to my user name when I use my now personal, work, wifes.

The only other email address i've had was with my broadband provider which was disabled ages ago (crappy webmail account which I now refuse to use).
