Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Microsoft comments on lack of new Xbox 360 exclusive IPs

Mr Puggsly said:
The PS3 gets praise for getting so many exclusives, but it should be noted most of them aren't particularly great and have modest sales. Some of their IPs have even seen a sharp decline.

Ultimately, the 360 has Halo, Gears, Forza, Fable, and Kinect. I personally think that outweighs Sony's line up which is why 360 is still going strong.

I don't think exclusives really play that large of a role in sales. Most of the PS360 owners I know play CoD, Madden, Basketball, a hyped multiplat (Battlefield, Skyrim, Batman, etc.) and maybe 1-2 excusives. Aside from Kinect, I don't think most people really care about exclusives. The PS3 & 360 are so similar that most consumers seem to be focused on just buying what looks cool, or what their friends have (as opposed to actually looking at their exclusives).

This is where Microsoft did great at. The one-year head start, intense advertising, their early competent online system, and just their general excellent start gave them a lot of momentum at the start of the gen. Their "first to 10m in America wins" comment may not have been fully true, but it has proven to be largely impactful.

Hmm Sony and MS could both have done better, and they both could have done worse in my opinion.

Both have about the same amount of exclusives right now that I care about. (Long live great multiplats!)

I'd just like to say that the article is a little bit lame (in my opinion) for implying the 360 is no longer a gaming machine, which is simply wrong.

Yeah you're completely right, and the few SONY franchises that were established have been hit pretty hard this gen (Final fantasy, gran turismo).

Wait what, FF isnt a Sony franchise ;p

But ya Gran Turismo hit a new low, mostly cause they took so damn long to make it, it was right up to the jokes along with Duke Nukem Forever lol.

How did it hit a new low?? You mean critic reviews? Meh

Critic reviews aside, the main thing is that it's just not the best of the best anymore, there was an unbelievable amount of hype around it and after what, 6 years in development? It finally came out and it was very good, but it was not the masterpiece people were expecting.

I don't know why it gets the flak it does. The only reason GT isn't the king of the mountain anymore is that there's a lot more competition. Gran Turismo will be Gran Turismo...I think some people just want to see GT turn into Forza a bit too much

Exactly, competition is why it's not the best of the best anymore. I don't think people want GT to turn into Forza, I think they just want GT to progress. I think the problem is that polyphony still think all they have to compete with is their previous game, if that makes sense. Hopefully things will be different with GT6.

Well critic reviews is one thing, but the main thing is that it's just not the best of the best anymore, there was an unbelievable amount of hype around it and after what, 6 years in development? It finally came out and it was very good, but it was not the masterpiece people were expecting.

Was the game really that bad? One of the main complaints I heard that DLCs killed the game, cause alot of the content you had to purchase separately from the game in order to get maximum satisifaction.

Huh? Wasn't bad at all (see bolded), just didn't live up to the incredibly high expectations and didn't blow away the competition is what I was trying to say.

Wouldn't know about the DLC, never bought it :P

I prefer a wide variety of different game choices, and this year xbox360 has no games.

Oh I see ;p

I'm waiting to see if the rumors are true about the revised GT5 before actually buying the game, if it is true, than I'll wait for it.

XL edition?

Never heard any rumours about a "revised GT5" O: link?

So in summary of the "quality/quantity" arguement here, most folks would rather eat a T-bone stake once a day and nothing else than and 3 items from the McD/KFC menu whenever you feel like it.

That analogy would make sense if people only played exclusives. Since that's not the case, you should also say that people have the option to a shit ton of other food supply, all varying in quality from the best of all food to the worst.

I should have written in past tense. Sorry about that.

In all honesty though, I think that's why the Wii has sold as well as it has. Every year from late 2006 to late 2010, you had about one BIG title every few months. Wii Sports was launched alongside with Twilight Princess, and then, in rough chronological order, they released Wii Play, Mario Party 8, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros Brawl, Mario Kart Wii, Wii Fit, Wii Sports Resort, Wii Fit Plus, New Super Mario Bros Wii, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Wii Party, and Donkey Kong Country Returns.

True, not all of the games above are masterpieces, but on average, Nintendo was able to produce about one 5+ million seller every four months. This only changed in 2011, when the big games, with the possible exception of Skyward Sword, stopped coming out. If it weren't for Zelda and Just Dance 3, a multiplaform game, the Wii would be in the shitter.

In contrast, Sony has had a lot of moderate hits. Over two dozen Sony-published games have become million sellers on the PS3, but only two, Uncharted 2 and Gran Turismo 5, ever reached the same tier as the above Nintendo hits. Therefore, the PS3 has been less sucessful, if one believes that hardware sells software rather than the other way around. However, these titles came out at a more steady rate, so PS3 sales have been better mantained than the Wii's.

I was only messing with you originally. No need to be sorry! This is a great post and I agree with it all. Will Nintendo be able to do the same for Wii U?

In my opinion? No. The Wii is the type of console that we may never see again, where one company and a dozen big games alone made it a market leader. This sort of thing works for the handhelds, where Nintendo is king, but the PlayStation 1 and 2 proved that huge 3rd party software combined with huge first party games trumps companies that rely on just 1st party titles.

Fortunately, Nintendo seems to realize this. They've been emphasizing how nice the Wii U will be for 3rd parties, and when they showed off software for the first time, it was Lego City Stories. I think Nintendo is trying to set the bar for the eigth generation the same way Microsoft did for the seventh, making their system the base developers work from. If they do so, they'll be able to at least be on par with their competitors. If they do this and continue making 3 huge titles a year, they could dominte the next generation like the PS2 did.

Except it's more like eating a T-bone steak once a day vs. eating a T-bone steak thrice per day

Personally I agree with you but I was trying to summarise the general feeling in here.

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

Xbox One: What are you doing Dave?

I guess it depends by gamer if it's an issue or not.
