Forums - General - English Wikipedia anti-SOPA blackout

So uhmm yeah, wtf is this? I did never hear about that and i think this SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) shit is crazy^^

"Today, the Wikipedia community announced its decision to black out the English-language Wikipedia for 24 hours, worldwide, beginning at 05:00 UTC on Wednesday, January 18 (you can read the statement from the Wikimedia Foundation here). The blackout is a protest against proposed legislation in the United States — the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the U.S. House of Representatives, and the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA) in the U.S. Senate — that, if passed, would seriously damage the free and open Internet, including Wikipedia."

No Wikipedia for 24 hours for some people...(who only speak english)

I don't think most people know what is being discussed. That's why Wikipedia is taking this step.
I think points are being overstated on both sides. But I am always afraid when you let industry set regulations ... which these bills do. Something is needed. But it appears that these bills are overreach.
Hopefully, the increased profile will lead to increased thought before action.
I wonder if others against this will take similar actions -- or throw their money around.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

i can't say how hard the impact would be my english isn't good enough to understand all of that perfectly but for some things we have something like this here in germany. for example without proxy i can't watch a huge amount of the music videos on youtube in germany.

when i open the video (let's say a lady gaga video lol) i get the information that i can't see it from germany because of copyright and blabla. i think this would be the case in usa as well then.

good i don't care about that i use a great proxy and youtube is "thinking" i'm from swiss^^ but this really sucks.

funny thing is lady gaga always says "please watch my video on youtube" and when i will watch it i couldn't without the proxy haha. the singer wants me to watch it and i get the information that it's against the copyright :)

Seems like the Aztecs (Mayans?) were wrong. The world ends already tomorrow.

Well at least I was warned about this, currently I can't get on eBay UK though.

In fact just checked .eu and .com, can't get those either.

EDIT: ok, maybe just scheduled downtime or some kind of error as I am on it now. Still it was almost 10 minutes I was trying, which is unusual.

I am glad they are raising awareness about this.

There are a few other sites doing this on the same day too. I wish Facebook and other BIG sites would do the same thing personally.

All post the same splash page about SOPA and how to contact your legislature.

That would be a good idea. Facebook is anti sopa isn't it. I thought google was too. That would really make people take notice if google did it too. But I doubt that could ever happen.
