Doesn't he mean overall though? We all know that if you include software 360 is first. But if we are talking actual raw numbers, PS3 should be above it unless 360 is undertracked by a lot.

The only time 360 had less than 1.6 million on shelves was last year when MS had problems to supply the channel... this year nothing like happened.

it doesnt matter, Last year on CES MS stated that were 50M Xbox 360 Sold, Shipments were 50.8 wich means 800k on Shelves, Now they announced 66M sold wich probably means 66.8 Shipments and another 800K on Shelves, maybe 67.3M Shipments and 1.3M on Shelves wich is unlikely... Any way 360 is still undertracked big time by 1M or more.

I play dance central with most of the students at my dormatory (chicks and non-gamers usually). They own 360's and all of them only play Dance Central. The actual 360 Gamers owners are a handful and after Christmas brought back PS3's and Wii's. PS3's used to be nonexistant at my dorms and now they are the largest section where people actually game. I play Dance Central all the time, I just don't want it. I'll play any game for that matter.
Kinect as I've said before can be used for gaming, but is bigger than gaming. Most people will be using it control their multimedia in the business and office. I hope Microsoft posts Kinects actual usage like Major Nelson because every month the games that are on top on Xbox Live are predictable. Kinect has the potential to be used in hospitals and more. Microsoft had a plan to make Kinect Huge, but its effect will be bigger outside of gaming, in the business, casual media and medical fields. Microsoft has never had a clear cut plan on what to do in the gaming industry besides to own your living room. No one guaranteed games.
I think we need to understand one point: MS or SONY are console manufacturers. They are not resellers. For them, the shipment means sales. Just read their FY report, their projection is focused on how many consoles sold to resellers, but not the quantity sold to consumers. For us, we always refer "sold to resellers" as "shipped".
So if XBOX360 was shipped more than PS3 in the past year, then MS of course can claim XBOX360 is the best selling console in 2011. If PS3 was shipped more than 360, SONY can do the same thing.
I don't why people here pay such huge attention to the numbers of sold to consumers. In fact, shipment figure is way more important than retail figure to indicate which company has the most sales.
Maybe we need to open a new tread to discuss which console is the best shipping console in 2011.
