I noticed a pattern. People who didn't play through Xenoblade Chronicles like Skyward Sword more than those who did.

XC is pretty awesome in terms of freedom, convenience, setting and size of the game world. It's a different genre, but in the comparable areas XC beats SS with ease.

Word on the streets it that Xenoblade is coming over eventually. Hopefully I'll give it a try, too.  I'll try to go in with realistic expectations, though.  That was probably a large part of my Skyward Sword problems.

It may not be bad, if you don't like it. The game can consume your life.

Knowing you, you'll probably turn it down because of its graphics. You've really become a snob.

You dare quote the mighty d21!?  Guards!!  KILL HI----you know.  You're kinda right.  I've changed, I guess.  It used to be all about the music.  What have I become?

Oh...yeah.  A snob.  You said that.

About Zelda's graphics, though. They are pretty bad. I don't notice them much anymore but they are early PS2 quality at times. I played Kirby's Epic Yarn and that game really wowed me. Fired up Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 and I was impressed. Same with Metroid 3, Punch Out, Smash Bros., Zack and Wiki, etc. I don't think I'm a graphics whore (yet!) but I don't think this game lives up to many Gamecube games--not even Starfox Adventures or Metroid Prime.

It's obvious that we're supposed to be blown away when we see Skyloft or that giant fish monster. It's not the case. The absorbing gameplay makes up for it, though. I didn't like the graphics at first but now, I barely notice them. And the way I flip-flop, I'll probably be saying it's the graphics king of this generation before I'm done.

Xenoblade was superb, but Skyward Sword kicks ass. Revisting the desert has to be one of my all time favourite gaming moments and the 'lobster' battle just rocks.

Xenoblade works better as an epic (and the scenery is breathtaking)

Yes.

www.spacemag.org - contribute your stuff... satire, comics, ideas, debate, stupidy stupid etc.

Yes, yes it is. I'm at the start of the Lanaryu Mining Facility and have heard only great things about it, so I'm eager to see it for myself.

Up until now, the game has only amazed me. Everything is fluid and precise, I love controlling the Beetle and how different the mechanics for almost every item are. Rolling the bombs like bowling balls is amazing, bug catching is pretty nifty too, heck I love every single motion control scheme in the game.

The new touch that they're giving to the Link&Zelda interaction is proving to be a good one so far too.

Can't wait to play more of SS, though sadly that'll have to wait until next weekend :/

I am very glad to hear that. You will like it more as you go on. You will even like Groose!

Nintendo's inhouse developers have never been especially good at using the graphical capabilities of their various systems to the fullest, except for the NES (Super Mario Bros. 3) where the means were simple and differences couldn't be all that significant. On the SNES and N64, Rare led the pack; on the Gamecube it was Rare and Retro; on the Wii it's Retro again. Nintendo's EAD Tokyo comes close with the Super Mario Galaxy games, but having everything floating in space helps a lot in saving processing power for the backgrounds (which don't exist at all for the most part).

Another thing that works against Skyward Sword is its artstyle. With cel-shading you can forget about most bump- and normalmapping, because it wouldn't fit with the style. Lighting also takes a hit and there's only so much you can do with metallic objects and surfaces without making them look out of place with the rest of the graphics. All this by default makes the graphics look less impressive from a technical perspective.

You'll get no argument from me!  To be honest, I'm just glad to see you on the side of the angels (Nintendo side) again.  Good to have you back!  Now that you have our guard down, I wouldn't mind if you.......gave us a reason not to trust people with Kim Possible avatars, if you know what I mean.

i agree with most of what you said, rol, but i feel that i have to mention that majoras mask has to be the best looking game on the nintendo 64. i cant think of any rare game that comes close. and when ocarina of time came out, no other 64 game was able to rival those graphics.

Rare and Retro did not lead the graphics pack on Gamecube; Factor 5 outdid them both.

And Skyward Sword does have some bumpmapping, for example on the Goddess Cubes and their chests and Tentalus's tentacles.

Gonna have to toss in my copy of Rebel Strike and see how well it held up........but not today.  Gotta go to bed.  I just wanted to say this:

I fucking love Skyward Sword.
