While I benefit from it as a consumer, the fact that reasonably new games are discounted to "fire sale" prices on steam does discourage me from paying full price for new games. Although I think that a low price/high margin business model is viable, the discounted games will hurt the sale of full priced games because many people (like me) will wait the 6 to 12 months to buy it at a discount. Now, I could be wrong but I suspect that Nintendo doesn't want to publish sales data because that will influence sales in undesirable ways. It is not (exactly) the same thing, but I have noticed on the android tablet marketplace that many of the more useful/better apps I've found were (somewhat) difficult to find because the apps are ranked by popularity/sales. I could be wrong but I suspect that the average user will choose an app based on the first few pages of results and this means that popularity/high-sales increases sales. |
I've also heard that people publishing through Nintendo have to accuractly predict what the sales are going to be because there is a six month hold on 2nd prints.
Making a list based upon sales popularity is not the same as publishing your sales. If you're working through a venue such as wii marketplace, you couldn't list the sales regardless of how much you tried, and certainly can't influence anyone's ability to sort based on such EVEN if you publish the sales on your own website.
Very different examples.
Nintendo is very adverse with third parties, from what I've heard. 01net says their third party policies are extremely limiting and hostile. Nothing to do with good business, unless Nintendo being the only business is the totality of "good business"
