People seem to be saying $80 price cut and not the ratio which is a an unprecedented 32% price drop in such a short period of time. The jump from 250 to 170 is massive. Also a 5 second google search found that the PS3 dropped officially from 599 to 499 in 2007 and not 399 like Carl2291 said it did. That and I bought one in late 2007 and knew this.
At its 170 price most consumers are probably confusing it as a new DS iteration like the DSi and DSXL so of course it will sell, compounded with those that actually wish to purchase one for Mario and Mario Kart.
Now if the 3DS sold this many at its $250 price tag, then i'd be impressed and rightfully so. I don't know why so many are defensive over Nintendo outselling a Nintendo device. I bought one at launch and am just stating it how it is. Those counter arguing with 'we don't know why people are so offended by this', we're not, we're just unimpressed.

It was me who quoted you, not Carl. The google search should show that the 60GB model dropped to $500 and a new model (40GB, I think) was introduced at the $400 price point. Since the 20GB model for $500 couldn't be found anymore shortly after launch, it was effectively a $200 price drop, because now you could get a PS3 for $400 instead of $600. That's a 33 % price drop. As previously mentioned, in Europe it was a crystal clear 33 % price drop for the PS3 about half a year after its launch. The whole point being that a price drop like the 3DS one isn't unprecedented. If people were confusing the 3DS with DS models, then 3DS software wouldn't sell as well as it did in the last two months. It's pretty obvious that the vast majority of people perfectly knows what they are buying. |
Your picking and choosing of the variables, in this regard being the SKUs is hilarious to say the least. It just doesn't work like that. It would be like me saying something ludicrous such as my launch 3DS being $3490AUD, and DSE selling a 3DS for $199AUD with a game(which they did) meaning the drop percentage wise with the game factored in comes to a drop >50%
60GB PS3 on launch was $599, and in 2007 60GB was $499, simple as that.
As for the software sales I want to wait a few weeks if not months until the holiday season is well over in order to see more rounded attach rates before we comment. Because it'd be a lie to say post launch title third party software sales are anything short of abysmal for the system.
They released compelling software. That is a major reason also

I am talking about official SKUs though and once again you didn't address the European price drop. I guess that counts as silent agreement that the 3DS price drop wasn't unprecedented in its magnitude. Also, you aren't the one to talk about cherrypicking. Not only did you choose to ignore the European price history of the PS3, but for 3DS software sales you are already moving the goalposts in advance by restricting it to third party software for no logical reason. |
I live in Australia which is regarded as PAL in the gaming world. It was a $200 drop, yet it initially went from $1000 to $800 which is a lower percentage than $250-170 or $350AUD-250. I want to see actual figures in Europe of the official drop of the 60GB SKU only, and not your conjecture about 20GB and 40GB SKUs which doesn't apply due to the cessation one of those SKUs.
Also I didn't just limit it to third party. You said the people are aware of what they're buying. I pointed out third party software because third party figures seem to say otherwise. That and MK Wiis attachment rate is higher than MK7s which is why I said wait a few weeks or months, it's to the 3DS's advantage. I'm not attacking anything, I'm stating fact, which is why I want to see the actual European price drop of the 60GB SKU.

You two get a room already.
still want a redesign but the fact that I will be going out to college soon and may not have enough time to play games makes me want to get this sooner.

Yup, the DS got really hurt in the long term by starting out at an already affordable price. There simply wasn't much room for Nintendo to make price cuts, so the 3DS is definitely also in for a rough ride. |
that time dollar value was alot more
