It is inevitable that a 3DS redesign will hit stores somewhere in 2012 or early 2013. We know that there will be an inclusion of a second analog pad. 

However should the exact same DS design hold? I believe this is the perfect opportunity to make other modifications to show that this is the 3DS not DS.

Should Nintendo fail to establish an adequate redesign then I see smoke in their horizon.

I want the start and select buttons to be under the face buttons where they belong. The Home Button can double as a Power button for all I care. Besides that, maybe a slightly smoother shape and more battery life will do.

I don't think it will change a lot. If they make a XL redesign it will be bigger, but will still look like a DS. Also, I don't believe Nintendo adding a second stick if sales continue trending so well.

They need another 'disaster' to put the second stick and launch as a redesign.

Exactly what kowenicki said. Those are very ugly designs! And why does everyone want a re-design so bad?! The 3DS we have now is perfectly fine it works and looks nice.

They just need to fix the D-Pad, battery life, and maybe put a stronger hinge and then just upgrade the friends list a little more with a simple firmware update.

A XL Edition wth a second stick... that's all that can be a new 3DS...
