The first one is obviously the better one, but that's mostly due to the uniqueness and the great story.
Bioshock 2 is gameplay-wise on par or even slightly ahead, but the story isn't told as well and the atmosphere is VERY similar to the first one.
The second one is still very enjoyable.

I think you can get for £5 Pre-Owned.
Bioshock 1 is, in everywhere, much more expensive than the 2.
Although I hated the B2, i'm still interested in B1.
Everyone has already pretty much nailed it: Bioshock 1 is much, much better. That's not to say that the second one is bad; it's an ok game. But it's a classic case of a sequel made just to cash in on the name of a successful (and truly exceptional) predecessor. It's not even the same team that makes it. Bioshock 1 is definitely my favorite game this gen. The imagination and story-telling have no equal, IMHO.
You owe it to yourself to play Bioshock 1 first. Definitely.
