meh... we'll see.
Gotta keep Sony guessing.

I'm considering picking up a 360 slim over christmas but don't want to get one to be told in january that the 720 is less than a year away. If it's a 2012 release then I'll make do with my old pro model, if it's a 2013 then I'll go for a slim and wait patiently.

I wouldn't quite bet on a release that soon
What i would bet on is that things will definitely be clearer by E3 2012, or potentially CES 2012
2012 Xbox 360 price cut, with GTA V and Halo 4 will drive sales.
2013 launch of Xbox 3 with Forza 5, CoD Modern Warfare 4, Ryse as big launch titles.
2014 Halo 5 and Fable IV
2015 Gears of War 4, Forza 5,
+ whatever all the new studios are working on.
sounds reasonable
Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

I actually see this as a possibility.
2012: Xbox 360 price cut June, to keep sales high through the 2nd half of the year, Halo 4, Star Wars Kinect, Fable Journy as SW in Q4, Witcher 2 and Alan Wake for 1st half.
2013: Mid year launch for 720, meaning wiiU doesn't get so much of a head start, and if PS4 does launch in 2013 it gets a 6 month~ headstart (they'll be clamouring for a headstart, be sure of that) Launch titles will be Forza 5, Rare title, something like Crackdown, with another Rare title at christmas and a semi big title.
2014: Halo 5 is too early, the main games don't have 2 year dev times (not even Halo 4) but we will likely see a Gears (3 years from today) and Fable IV (2 years from Journy) and another Rare title (they normally push out 1 retail game per year on average, only co produced KS2 with Big park, so I think they have a lot of stuff in the pipeline.
2015: Halo 5, and every other 1st party dev that hasn't put a game out yet.
2013 - 2015 we should expect to see Halo 5, Fable IV, Lionheads new IP, Crackdown 3, Alan Wake 2, Forza 5 (probably Forza 6 too), Gears 4 or new sequel and new IP from the new studios.
Sorry Xbox but the lack of exclusives doesnt deserve my money.....I think Im gonna wait for ps4 and see what it has to offer this time....Halo and Fable is not worth it in my opinion

I think Sony and Microsoft are going to try their damnedest to release the same year. Neither manufacturer will want to let the other get a Call of Duty de facto (next gen) exclusive on their next console.
While speculation is fun, most of us have NO IDEA what games will introduce the next generation of Xbox. ALL of these new 1st party studios, Rare, Kinect 2.0, the new XBLA, 3rd party (timed?) exclusives ... there are far more unknowns than knowns. Heck, we don''t even know if this time frame is accurate!
This is an interesting rumor. No reason to make definitive declarations about the strength of the MGS future game lineup or if current franchises (mega or otherwise) will dominate the next generation. Outside of Halo, Fable and Forza Motorsport, we really don't know how things will play out in the future.

I'm only thinkin April-May because GTAIV and Red Dead Redemption were that time of year in 2008 and 2010 respectively. So GTAV in April-May 2012 follows the pattern perfectly. It does seem too soon since they just announced it like a month ago but you can't underestimate R*!
