3DS had the same price and is a handheld, so it should be comparable to it. Alot of the hype was also because of the big launch line-up they had mentioned at E3 an by the time of the launch,most of the games had been delayed.

Nintendo own projections fell short.

But Nintendo shipped around 400k at launch, theyw ere conservative about the launch. Vita on the other hand is gonna be 5000 yen more expensive and actually faces 3DS competition. I think some old MH fans won't be buying the Vita now, and that will affect sales. Maybe week 1 will be gret, but I doubt it for week 2 and onwards unless Sony have a major announcement

they aren't necessary for one to place the game

You need them to launch games like Uncharted, hot shot golf and Disgaea 3, in my opinion the best launch games. So we can say it is necessary.
