It seems as though great storytelling includes the word fuck.

Pulp Fiction managed to use it 265 times. Goodfellas is even higher.

..and Scarface I'm sure is pretty high too.  So is House of the Dead: Overkill and we know that that was masterful storytelling, right?

Wii owners tell me that everything about House of the Dead: Overkill is brilliant, so I suppose so, yes.

How is a video game going to change the f*cking industry? The gaming industry maybe but...

Somebody has never played RapeLay.

EDIT: Or Mass Effect, come to think of it.

Too much negativity towards this game.

It's the generation where this would be bound to happen. Personally, there's TONS of games on the market that fit what you personally want to play. Why is ND getting shit on for making this game? Cause it's not Uncharted?

Last time I checked the developers can't do whatever they want, they make the game not you. All you do is buy it, and if there's a few bad apples in the bunch they don't care, because I know ND has a very respectful reputation between PlayStation and the industry itself. They are a great team and I have 100% faith that this game will deliver.

You don't like it? Don't buy it. Stop complaining that it's not what you wanted it to be.

Oh how much fun it is to speculate on vague dev comments and teaser trailers which reveal very little...

I've seen this dance so many times, can't do it anymore.

Call of Duty already changed (destroyed) the industry enough by copying Hollywood and the cinematic experience. In this console generation nearly all big budget games already turned from being games into being interactive movies. And now these guys are cheered for dumbing down gaming even more.

Call of Duty is almost entirely focused on gameplay, I'm not sure what you are implying here.

that a game must have a bad story or cinematics to have good gameplay obviously... the worrying thing is that there seems to be many people who share this view

Negativity? Really? Most of what I saw when it comes to The Last of Us his overwhelming excitement especially for a game we know virtually nothing about. I'm personally really looking forward to the game based solely on Naughty Dog's track record but I'm reserving my hype and excitement until the moment where I see some gameplay.

I'm all for good stories in video games, but to be honest I play games for the gameplay more than the story. As great as it would be for every game to have as good of writing as Alan Wake and Uncharted I'd rather game developers focus on making the best gameplay possible. Naughty Dog has created some great characters, but the Uncharted games are kind of like interactive movies. Once you've seen the story to the end there's little reason to play the game. All the set pieces and quite a lot of the games themselves are so scripted that replaying the game is liking watching a rerun. People complained that FF13 was too linear, but I'd argue that people are giving Uncharted a pass on linearity because they like the cinematic experience.

I hope Naughty Dog does the rise the bar for storytelling in games. I just hope it doesn't mean games turn into interactive movies. I like exploring too much to want to see games be limited as much as the Uncharted games are.

This mirrors my sentiments to a "T". Naughty Dog isn't looking for followers (if anything, they're looking to distinguish themselves). That would be the greatest reason my hype is sky high. I'm with Slimebeast in not wanting every game to follow this trend, but disagree that it's a bad route for Naughty Dog to take.

Yes they are, it's all in the article:

[...]his team wanted to "raise the bar" in order to make other game developers realise: "Okay, I really need to learn the craft of storytelling, I really need to involve my actors in this in order to get realistic performances and realistic actors. That's what we want to do."

We're going to keep pushing ourselves, and kill ourselves to make this story happen - but hope that by doing it, the rest of the industry is going to take notice and try to do the same thing."

That's not necessarily telling the industry to follow them, in absolute. It's saying things need to tighten up, that if you're going to attempt to do storytelling, don't half-ass it. In such case, I agree, mainly because it's not saying things need to be more contextual or "Uncharted-like".

I took their words as inspirational, rather than directional, but still wouldn't want an industry full of Naughty Dog-style clones either.

If that's how you see it then I agree completely. Not all games need to have amazing storytelling (or a story at all) but if that's one of your selling points you gotta put the effort like ND does.

good point then that also means that we shouldn't have guys like slimebeast calling it an interactive movie already ( i'm sure this is part of the negativity he was reffering to ) as he has been in almost every thread made on it so far
