Good, because the argument was moot. If they still wanted to use Linux, they simply shouldn't update past the update where it was removed, simple as that.

You say it as though people had a legitimate choice.  They didn't.

That's an ultimatum.

Sony got away with telling people, DO THIS OR ELSE.

On principle, Sony should have lost this.

No, Sony said that you can continue to use Linux, but if you do, you can't use the PlayStation Network

It is very simple, and this is why Sony make consumers agree to things, so that they can keep control of the system

People had a choice to continue playin games or remove otherOS. ps3 firmware updates also come on game discs not just when you connect to the psn. The choice wasn't otherOS or psn, it was otherOS or playing games.

Either the judge missed that point or in the end it was never mandatory to update and remove "other OS" to play new games. Personally I never saw concrete proof of this. Something like a youtube video showing the removal of "other OS" by an on disc mandatory update. Honestly, if this has been proved, the judge is dumb. Playing all PS3 games comes with your purchase, which isnt the case with PSN.

really and truly i place most of the blame on geohot, had he not distributed  means to break through the security sony wouldn't have removed other os ( there would have been no reason to )

You mean the security on a device that he paid for? That bastard! How dare he attempt to modify something that's his!

People here have to realise that this was Sony's attempt to regulate user purchased hardware in order to save money on server-side security. After this debacle, as well as the hacking attempts on a lax security PSN, it has come back to bite them on the ass.

Now, if Sony was handing out PS3s for free, then you wouldn't hear me complaining. Sony could do what they want with hardware that's still theirs, but this is hardware purchased by a customer. Are you really going to stand there and say that Sony have a right to do this?

"the security on a device that he paid for?" good point but he didn't pay for mine or anybody elses ps3 and when he starts to distribute hacks that affect other users he has to be held accountable in some way...

i'm quite sure that had he kept his hacks to himself and his as you say "device that he paid for" sony nor any of the ps3 community would've cared about him but he didn't his actions affected the entire ps3 community

"Are you really going to stand there and say that Sony have a right to do this?" legally yes and i already said it was unfair but of course i'd rather have a console with support for games and cheat free online play as opposed to the opposite ( what goehots actions would've led to going by what happened with psp )... you may disagree but i bought my ps3 ( and i'm guessing most have ) for games not operating systems that can be better supported on a pc

Sad sad day when a company gets away with ripping it's fans off and they defend it :(

Well-said!

I completely understand why it was dismissed, but that doesn't mean it was right. Disgusting.

lol ripping us off? There's like 10 nerds who care about Other OS, the other 50 million PS3 owners don't give a rats ass.

I'm sure you're looking forward to the day when corporate entities tell you exactly what to do...

lolol, the crux of the issue is i believe in IP and you don't. i believe that individuals as well as corporations that invest in the creation of new things and new ideas deserve ownership of their work.  you believe you are entitled to other peoples work.

So now he's also holding a gun to your head to force you to modify your hardware? What kind of retarded logic is this, exactly? If you don't want the damn hack, don't put it on your PS3. Problem solved.

The "entire ps3 community", by which you mean PSN, is a service that Sony supplies, and therefore they DO have a right to secure that. Once again, the problem isn't CLIENT SIDE SECURITY, it's SERVER SIDE SECURITY. Am I going to have to repeat this a dozen times every time this conversation comes up? For fucks sake...

Your Strawman argument isn't worth answering, though I will break a few logical steps for you

1. Purchased hardware DOES NOT imply third party modification

2. Freedom for hardware you purchase DOES NOT imply piracy

People still have the right to pursue copyright infringement, with or without forcible enforcing client side security. Nobody is taking that away. Also, you're implying that people don;t want client side security ONLY so they can hack? Well then, we'd better make sure nobody out there is allowed to modify on their PC anymore, either!

"he's also holding a gun to your head"

no but his hacks affected others when they are used to cheat in games ( affecting users ) and to pirate software ( affecting publishers and developers although i believe it was never so extensive that it had a great effect but it probably would have eventually led to a situation like the psp if nothing was done about it )

and i'll reiterate this one more time i absolutely believe that the user has the right to modify their console as they see fit but not when others have to suffer the consequences because of their actions

First they came for the other operating systems,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a "nerd".

I haven't purchased or played a single game on my PS3 since they removed the Other OS feature on principal that I refuse to line their pockets further as they gleefully fleece me of features I paid for. This stopped being a issue for me a long time ago and Sony will not be getting anymore of my money in the future anyway. Not a big loss for them really as I would only have bought 3 or 4 games in that timescale anyway.

I remember people saying that those of us who complained about this issue were just doing so because it didn't matter, well 18 months down the line I assure you it does still matter to some and it's disgusting this case got thrown out by a judge that I would question if he has the necessary skills to pass judgement on a case like this anyway.

For the record people are entitled to make their own minds up how they spend their money and I don't blame consumers who couldn't care less about Other OS continuing merrily on their way. Still not sure why I haven't hacked my PS3 to get the best of both worlds in terms of piracy and homebrew...
