Forums - Nintendo - Wii U Could Cost $600 At Release?

I got this from the Game Zone, one of the sites VGC lists in their News section on the home page.  Apparently, EB Games Australia and Zawi have both listed the price of the Wii U in their part of the world, each of which converts to ~$600 US.  Also, Gaming Bolt is reporting that Carrefour (which is the largest French Mall) has also priced the Wii U.  This again converts to ~$600 US.  - Source

Now, before some of you jump to the conclusion that these are all definitely placeholders, the article notes that this isn't the first time EB Games Australia has revealed the price of a Nintendo system early.  In July '10, 7 months before its launch in Japan, they started taking preorders for the 3DS at the price of $348 AU.  This turned out to be only $1 less than the actual launch price in Australia.  Considering there is probably about 7 more months, maybe less, til the Wii U launches, this may turn out to spot on, as well.

Having said that, I know you that even if this turns out to not be a mere placeholder, you still can never do a straight conversion to get the price of a console in another region of the world, so most likely the Wii U will be less than $600 in the US.  Given that the 3DS was $100 less in the US compared to AU, I would guess the Wii U would end up being $150-$200 cheaper, or $400-$450, here in the States.

So, do you think this will end up being the right price?  If so, will it hurt Nintendo's chances of dominating again next gen?

So we have no confirmed specs yet there's a price I can't imagine why this sounds faulty?

Former something....

Nintendo would have learnt from sonys mistake at the beginning of this gen and most recently their own with the 3ds. $400 in the us is my guess. $500 here in Australia. I can't justify paying that much for a console unless I could use it as a fridge too.

599.99! I think Nintendo would be crazy to do this! But...but if they do it would give them the opportunity to later on reduce the price like they did for the 3DS, right around the time the 360 is supposed to come out. If they can get some sort of exclusive like the 3DS did, then that would be a bonus as well. Like I heard a rumor they were going to try and get GTA5 or something. (it was from one site that I do not trust, but still a rumor)

Yea, $600 would be nuts.  You can see how that price point hurt the PS3 early on in its life, and that was a pretty big leap in graphical power over the PS2.  The Wii U is going to have better graphics than the PS3, but it's not going to be that big of a leap.  But, like I said, it won't be that high here in the US.  I'm thinking it will be more inline with $400.

Even at that price, though, I can see them struggling out of the gate.  For one, I think the launch of the 3DS proved that people buy Nintendo not only for their innovations, but also for their price.  They don't mind sacrificing power for a lower price.  With the Wii U, they may have to sacrifice both power and price, as the tablet seems to be causing a spike in the price.  And two, the NeXbox and the PS4 will be just around the corner when the Wii U launches.  And while I'm not sure what MS has in planning, we already know Sony is looking to keep PS4 costs to a minimum.  This means continuing to use Blu-ray and probably an evolution of the Cell tech, while using more money in providing more RAM and a much better GPU.  I can really see the PS4 launching for ~$400-$500.

it makes sense that the price would be high because Nintendo doesn't develop or co-develop any of it's consoles hardware themselves,
BUT 600 is too high , since you can get console-type tech for less than that, even for PCs that is considered high nowadays, unless they're planning on including micro versions of the CPUs (since CPUs are way too pricey) of today, but that would be a financial suicide, and besides seeing how small the console is , i doubt it, unless they're planning on adding an external cooler xD

i say its probably using Xbox-like tech (or a little better), with a better micro processor, probably something like "Teh cell"

HAHAHA no Nintendo will not pull a stupid on us... i mean a Sony on us!

seriously did people miss the part were Iwata said "we will not make the same mistake as we did with 3DS"?

this means we are not going for a high price only to reduce it a few months later

    R.I.P Mr Iwata :'(

Possible seeing how the PS3 launched at high price in AU (899-999 AUD?)

But specs first, price later if you don't mind retailers.

At 450-600 EUR, I won't be buying the WiiU though, I'd prefer to reserve that money for the NextBox.

Same ol' same ol' Australia always gets raped on electronic goods prices. It's probably $50 US. The PS3 launched here at $1000

Sure will cost 600€/$ because the WiiU it is...wait i don't know.

I laugh at the thought you think Wii U is only 7 months away, I think Nintendo will struggle to get it out before the end of 2012, was clear at last E3 it was nowhere near final and there is no way they will send it out the door gameless like they did 3DS. Wait for them to announce a big first party title, then it will probably land 6 months after that.

I fully expect a November 2012 world wide release.
