A nice summary of Famitsu's interview with Nippon Ichi CEO Sohei Niikawa.

Niikawa: "The overseas market is key. It's not something we can turn our backs to. However, I think it's a bad idea to create products targeted for the West. ... Our only choice is to make titles that hardcore Japanese fans go for, then bring them out overseas as a purely made-in-Japan product. Disgaea is a success in the West, so I think it's best to go with a natural flow instead of trying to force ourselves in some unnatural direction."

Isn't that the best company mentality ever?

The interesting part of that interview to me is they specifically talk about their partnership with Gust, which we now know could be in jeopardy with the Tecmo buy out. So either he had no idea that was going to happen or they don't expect it to change their current partnership.

It's certainly something that a specific company (I'm looking at you Square) should adopt. While they may not have the huge sales numbers like SE, they do seem to do rather well.

Yep. If you want to westernize your game, make sure to open a branch in the West to make said game.
Trying to make a game that you don't understand is just...

I am a Fan of NIS for a long time now, because they dont care about the majority, they just do their own thing, and that's just great. But the problem is that they lack the ressources to do something huge. =( the worst example is 'Last Rebellion'. i loved this game for the 10 hours that it lasted to achieve everything, but yeah.. they had to trade tons of hours of gameplay in order to create a few mediocre 3D Models.

Disgaea is one of, if not the greatest, srpg series of all time. Ill always support NIS.
