Forums - Gaming - Will PSPs sales be enough to warrant a PSP2?

Isn`t PSP BEST selling non nintendo portable console? =)

Anyway, 1/3 market share and against DS, it just a great result.
And well, PSP is not done yest, it could easy have 40%.

Anyway, Sony did mistake, not being able to include r2 and l2 on ps2 with right stick. In that case, every PSone game would be running without problem on psp, that would be make psp a must have.

Every 5 seconds on earth one child dies from hunger...

Alternatively, the PSP2 could be made into a cheap laptop device. It is already good for multimedia playback, and it would be a niche the DS has no foothold in.

That's actually not a bad idea ... An 8 or 9 inch laptop/PDA device could be fairly popular

Sure, thanks to the piracy they've sold enough hardware for people to consider it a viable alternative. They just need to make it more hack resistant in the PSP2 model... or alternativly just make and market it like a better Iphone that also plays games.

No, the PSP2 needs:
-Similar Graphical Levels
-Much longer battery level
-Slimmer body
-A better analog stick (if any)
-A format worth crap(Not UMD again...)

The handheld market is a whole different ball game.

I believe that they will make a PSP2. It has more than held its own against the DS, and it is the best-selling non-Nintendo handheld. But if I were a game developer, I would be worried about software sales. The original has proven that there is room for 2 handhelds. Sony just has to make sure that software sales are better next time.

The psp is my opinion was brought in ahead of its time(like the ps3) sony should have waited for 2006 release, having a cheaper price(nobody will pay $249.99 for a handheld)

and UMD died because the only thing you can use it on was the psp, if they had the connect to TV feature it has now UMD would have been as popular as DVD.

I do think there will be a PSP 2 but i think Sony, as said previously, need to work on the software aspects of the console! Having the games on Flash memory could also be a good option as the load times with the UMD were a bit too long for what a handheld should be...

Touch-screens would be interesting but i don't think Sony would go down that route as they would basically be copying the DS...

All we need to do is wait and see if something is announced! I do like the idea of dual joysticks for FPS games though :D

Me too! thats what I miss most. I was disappointed when I saw Killzone: Liberation was an overhead view. Would have been a FPS if there had been a second joystick.

yes i think the sales are enough to warrant a successor but what sony needs to do is to make it have dual analog

It seems that its good hardware sales are either due to its non-gaming functions, or due to the fact that it's extremely easy to pirate PSP games. Something has to explain such low software sales.

The way I see it, this means that the viability of a PSP2 is not a given.

It was extremely easy to pirate PS2 games as well as XBOX games(which had the best attach ratio last gen). Of course it was extremely easy to pirate Dreamcast games and that did kill it for Sega. However with the PSP I think it is selling because of its multimedia capabilites as evidence by the very early sales of UMD movies which dropped once programs made it easier to copy your DVD to the PSP. The ability to play games is a nice bonus.

"Easy" to pirate is a very relative thing ...

  • The PSP and Dreamcast required no hardware modifications, and everything you did need was available at most stores that sold the systems.
  • The DS and Gameboy required people to buy products from somewhat untrustworthy websites
  • The XBox, Playstation and PS2 required you to buy a product from a somewhat untrustworthy website and modify your hardware
  • The Gamecube required you to buy a product from a somewhat untrustworthy website and either use a very expensive disc medium (8 cm DVD) or buy a case mod.
  • The N64 required you to buy a very expensive add-on for your system.

And none of that stuff stops 99% of the people who are into hacking consoles and handhelds.

Besides, not all of that is completely true. There is a very obvious website out there that's rather trustworthy where you can buy components to mod all of those systems you listed(except the N64) and tbh, you don't need to go to a website and buy anything to mod a slim PS2. All you need is tape and tissue. And I'd hardly call Amazon.com an untrustworthy website. The hacking scene for the PS2 and Xbox was bigger than it is for the PSP and neither of those consoles ever had such low software sales.

Anyway, the low software sales could be fixed if Sony would just market the PSP2 as a gaming device first and foremost. Most people would have been aware of the multimedia features without Sony focusing on them so much.

PSP2 should definitely have two analog sticks, maybe a touch screen(don't want to make it too much like the DS). More later after work.........

Off topic:

The next gen psp need to have these features

1. 360 level graphics
2. HD 720p screen
3. another analog stick
4. embedded 3.0MP camera
5.improved flash player and interenet browser

6. HDD, with 128mb of ram, and atleast 8GB of Harddrive space.

Last but not least:

7. Smaller than the psp-2000

Oh yes use the same strategy used for PSP, that ultimatley led to it getting crushed by the DS.  Implement that with the PSP2 and of course now it'll have success.  Get serious.  If they use the exact same strategy as they did with the PSP, then they'll get creamed once again.  Live and learn Sony.  Find out what made DS a success, and implement it in your own way.  Its the only way to succeed.
