The way I see it, this means that the viability of a PSP2 is not a given.

It was extremely easy to pirate PS2 games as well as XBOX games(which had the best attach ratio last gen). Of course it was extremely easy to pirate Dreamcast games and that did kill it for Sega. However with the PSP I think it is selling because of its multimedia capabilites as evidence by the very early sales of UMD movies which dropped once programs made it easier to copy your DVD to the PSP. The ability to play games is a nice bonus. |
"Easy" to pirate is a very relative thing ... - The PSP and Dreamcast required no hardware modifications, and everything you did need was available at most stores that sold the systems.
- The DS and Gameboy required people to buy products from somewhat untrustworthy websites
- The XBox, Playstation and PS2 required you to buy a product from a somewhat untrustworthy website and modify your hardware
- The Gamecube required you to buy a product from a somewhat untrustworthy website and either use a very expensive disc medium (8 cm DVD) or buy a case mod.
- The N64 required you to buy a very expensive add-on for your system.

And none of that stuff stops 99% of the people who are into hacking consoles and handhelds.
Besides, not all of that is completely true. There is a very obvious website out there that's rather trustworthy where you can buy components to mod all of those systems you listed(except the N64) and tbh, you don't need to go to a website and buy anything to mod a slim PS2. All you need is tape and tissue. And I'd hardly call Amazon.com an untrustworthy website. The hacking scene for the PS2 and Xbox was bigger than it is for the PSP and neither of those consoles ever had such low software sales.
Anyway, the low software sales could be fixed if Sony would just market the PSP2 as a gaming device first and foremost. Most people would have been aware of the multimedia features without Sony focusing on them so much.
PSP2 should definitely have two analog sticks, maybe a touch screen(don't want to make it too much like the DS). More later after work.........
