Just some more numbers:

02.2011 4th Week: 371,326 Units (3DS Launch)
12.2011 1st Week: 216,350 Units (Mario Kart 7 Release)
08.2011 3rd Week: 214,821 Units (3DS Hardware Price Drop)
03.2011 1st Week: 206,087 Units (Week Following 3DS Launch)
11.2011 1st Week: 128,287 Units (Super Mario 3D Land Release)
08.2011 4th Week: 107,462 Units (Week Following Hardware Price Drop)

As many have said before me, second highest week since launch, and most probably going to be beaten later on this week and will have a shot at 500k for Christmas week. It's already headed with a rampant start!

Mario Kart (Super Famicom, 11/1990): Total 3.82 million units
Mario Kart 64 (Nintendo 64, 12/1996): First Week 160,363 / Total 1,711,661
Mario Kart Advance (Game Boy Advance, 07/2001): First Week 261,797 / Total 938,175
Mario Kart Double Dash (Gamecube / 11/2003): First Week 179,230 / Total 825,894
Mario Kart DS (Nintendo DS / 12/2005): First Week 224,411 / Total 3,837,894
Mario Kart Wii (Wii, 04/2008): First Week 608,147 / Total 3,279,183
Mario Kart 7 (3DS, 12/2011): First Week 451,932

As for MK7, well that's the second highest debut for a MK series. It should reach 1.5 million by the end of December if not more.

SM3D Land also seems like it's holding well right before the holiday rises which bodes well..

As for MH3G prediction week, I'd say around 300k, maybe a shot at 350? Not sure really and it all depends on the MH boost which should be around 50-60k, as well as the holiday boost vs week after MK7 drop. But since momentum is on the 3DS's side, I'd go for 250-300k next week!

Wii MK was huge! Didn’t know that before

As for MH-try G wasn’t there a pre-order number posted before? Can’t remember were it was or the actual pre-order number but I’m sure it was above 300k

I ment hardware. 300k for the 3DS that week! MH3G should have a 90% sell through meaning around 370-380k FW if no second shipment arrives

I think most people with any sense knew that as soon as Nintendo bought out some decent games and got the price to a reasonable level that the system would sell just as well as the old DS, especially come the holidays. It is only the select few who has fun predicting the demise of 3DS and Nintendo...

It's especially enjoyable watching Android/iOS fans being wrong about the death of dedicated handhelds.

For now, the rise of tablets and phones does worry me (and you mean iOS not OSX)

Whoops! I blame exams for my random mistakes lately.

Where was that one thread with the comic... ah! Here it is: http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=109863

It's funny how people manage to get history to repeat itself.

The thing that always bothered me about the "Tablet/iTouch will kill handhelds" sentiment is the lack of focus on software.

This is a generalization, but a Nintendo  exec once said it best, "Nintendo is the box that plays Mario games". It isn't pretty but it is true; as long as those Mario games properly serve the customers has they have been, handhelds won't just die off.

I have an itouch with the standard app fare but for the children and core users, there is always a spot for handhelds. Kids want it as the holiday toy, Mario/Pokemon box, and core users want the rest of the 1st party efforts & nostalgia. Plus, Japan has been producing the high-selling handheld content and has a presence globally in software that will support a handheld VG market.

Leatherhat on July 6th, 2012 3pm. Vita sales:"3 mil for COD 2 mil for AC. Maybe more. "  thehusbo on July 6th, 2012 5pm. Vita sales:"5 mil for COD 2.2 mil for AC."

good points.

Phones, Ipads, Ipod touches, etc will not kill handhelds. They will eat into certian markets here are a few-

1. The people who bought the PSP for a media device that can play movies and games. Tablets now exsist and are better for this. But still if the person wants to play traditional games at will get a PSP/3DS + IPad or whatever.

2. People who bought the DS soley for Brain Age type games. These are not gamers by any means, most see themselves as sophisticated, and right now things like the Iphone are what people who think they are sophisticated are gravitating to, not to mention phones do brain age type stuff almost as good as a DS.

3. People who only use handhelds to kill time in smaller increments. For example, when I am at my unit I will whip out my Droid phone and play Spades or Blasterball, I am not going to whip a 3DS where I work (I am a military officer....)

People who will still buy handhelds

1. Core gamers- there are some great gaming experiances to be had on a handheld, not gonna miss all of them.

2. Travellers- While the iOS type games are good will filling 20-30 min spaces of time for people who travel a handheld is nice, it is more more convientent than pulling out a laptop every 30 min, but provides a much more intiutive than iOS games.

3. Kids- Not many parents are going to get their 6 year old an iPod touch or Iphone or even an Ipad....

4. Casual Gamers- This is where Mario 2D/ Pokemon/ Mario Kart/ Madden/ Etc  comes in. They may buy it for those types of games, the key thing that sepates them from the brain age crowd is they enjoy a tradtional experiance. These are the guys who push sales in years 3-5 of a system.

Either way, there is still a massive market for handhelds. I dont think we will see the 3DS ever hit the hieghts that the DS did, but I think it will out do the GBA by a wide margin, in fact I see the 3DS demographics looking more like the GBA was back in the day, and possibly the type of content in its library.

Fun fact:

In 2011, where he didn't predict doom for Wii, it happened

Is the wii doomed? I thought it was still selling pretty well for a console nearing the end of it's lifecycle.
