Yes, you said it and you have been very wrong before. I have yet to play Kirby's Adventure Wii, but chances are good that the Wii will have five 2D platformers that are better than Rayman Origins, because NSMB Wii, DKCR, Wario Land and Epic Yarn already are.
What happened to the reviews of Rayman Origins is that reviewers probably didn't play all levels. Scratch that. They most certainly didn't play the entire game.
Now what I am wondering is what came first: Terrible level design that led to infinite lives and plenty of checkpoints as last resort or infinite lives that gave the makers of Rayman Origins a free pass to design outright unfair trial and error passages. If anybody thought that the mine cart and rocket barrel levels in DKCR are too much, multiply that frustration by a factor of ten. Some bosses also cannot possibly be beaten on your first try.
Rayman Origins positions itself somewhere between a skillbased platformer (like NSMB Wii and DKCR) and one that emphasizes exploration (like Wario Land and Epic Yarn). The former is much better done in the Nintendo games, because the level design is actually fair, more varied and the controls are more precise. The latter is also much better done in the Nintendo games, because the secrets are better hidden. As such, RO can only be recommended to people who already own all Nintendo platformers and want another game. Everyone else is better off by checking out the Nintendo games first.
The multiplayer aspect of RO also falls flat. Many Lums have to be collected within a time limit (which ultimately earns you additional Electoons), so a good portion of the game needs to be played in singleplayer, if you aim for completion. Even worse are the levels where you have to chase a treasure chest, that's almost 20 % of the game you shouldn't even bother with in multiplayer.
The most positive thing I can say about RO is that it makes one appreciate Nintendo games and realize just how far ahead of any competitors they are. It's not a bad game, but certainly not as good as critics want you to believe. It's 6/10 gameplay with 10/10 artstyle and since reviewers value style over substance, RO garnered very good scores.

PS Rayman appears to be great -- although its slow sales (especially on Wii) show that most people don't recognize good 2D platforming.

More like the opposite. Especially on the Wii where there are at least four, probably five, better retail games.
