Forums - Gaming - cliffy b.: "the triple-a game might be going away"

so there is an interview with him here:

http://www.oxm.co.uk/36636/the-triple-a-game-might-be-going-away-cliff-bleszinski/

please read it by yourself my engish isn't good enough to write it here but what do you think?

i just wonder because it seems that epic games is the one who wants the next consoles more than everybody else but they "live" from selling unreal engine licences and yeah from selling their own games. if he really thinks it will be so hard next gen why do they hope so much to get it as soon as possible?

less games would mean much less money for them and if it's so expensive it would mean less winnings for them.

or do they think more and more will  make an own engine for this gen don't needing unreal engine anymore? so they need the next gen because then noone can afford an own engine anymore and they all have to buy the next unreal engine like they had to buy this gen?

Good ... Maybe "game" games can be theme of next gen.

there are plenyt of "game" games on the market. maybe more than ever before just not as retail game. you have to play indie games or so then ;)

i play videogames for 22 years now and i really don't think i miss "real" games. all i miss are some more hard games like dark souls.

Right. Game games should be restored as boxed products because reducing their selling value, which i nominally have no problems with from a market perspective (you have to adopt to market trends after all, which is seeing low, low prices), means that these types of games will never get high-profile development, however, and since they tend to be intrinsically better than movie-games, this is a bad thing

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

I don't know if Cliffy B knows but today, a AAA game is referred to a 90+ game on metacritic.

This can be achieved with any game, regardless of budget.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

the question is why there aren't game games anymore for retail. seems like the market wasn't big enough and if the next gen comes i don't believe they can make this like they did in the past because even if they stop to put much money in developement for the aaa titles it would cost much more than it did for this gen to make game games and they didn't make this kind of games this gen for retail.

but i still think there are enough good games oon the market. it's not every game like cod.

17 year ago devs said they don't want to make games for the sony playstation especially AAA games because that would be way to expensive....17 years later gamers are drowning in the amounts of AAA games released the last months... It is only a few years ago that this site was full with Nintendo fanboys who said that their will be hardly games for PS3/and X360 because making HD games would be way to expensive!...

I wouldn't trust Nintendo fanboys if I were you.

i think getting back to basic's is what's needed. why do we need to push graphic's? yea everybody likes a good looking game but t wee need are games that innovate and play better.

playing on a harder difficulty should not be about loosing more health. the focus should be on smarter Ai. i've already talked about the cost of dev. increasing next gen, but most here seemed to be ok with $80.00 a game. i agree with Kb for the most part. heres the post.

Epic's Cliff Bleszinski thinks true-blue blockbusters may be too expensive to develop once next generation consoles arrive, with only a handful of big brands able to support annual instalments.

"That's a fair enough risk," he told OXM, when we asked whether next generation hardware costs could spell doom for cash-strapped developers. "The six-to-eight hour triple-A game might be going away, maybe there's only three or four that come out a year, and those are the established brands."

Triple-A games are like Gears 3 Silverbacks - pricey, powerful but all too easily wasted. For Bleszinski, the secret to survival in today's troubled market is understanding exactly who you're making a game for. "The key is to bet on people who understand technology, but also understand creative and business. Too many games are made just because somebody says 'A bullfighting game sounds cool!' And you're like 'That would only play in Spain.'
"People just get these random things they want to make, and other people throw money at them without looking at the business. We need not only to be creative but also to be surgical in terms of the games we make."

Some developers believe that second-hand game sales are among the things sapping the industry's lifeblood. Epic cohort Rod Fergusson commented recently that companies need to "actively fight used game culture" with their DLC strategies. Bleszinski skimmed over the issue in our chat. "There's a whole discussion we can have about the disc-based market versus rental and used."
