I actually only enjoy CoD4 for the single player, I in general hate online multiplayer.

the campaign is pretty short though....i would recommend that he rent it.

I can agree with that considering I only borrowed it from someone and didn't buy it (though I'm considering buying it still).

I would buy Call of Duty 4. I own R & C (good but not blown away), Burnout Paradise (disappointed) after demo, DMC4 (should be awesome but still isn't available), Assassins Creed (is love it or hate it.).

Definately ratchet and clank if youre not gonna play online. COD4's campaign isnt the longest in the world, and the best experience is definately online so Id skip it.
