Forums - Sales - Pachter: Redesigned 360 coming Late 2012

Xbox 720 rumors have been circulating quite a bit in recent weeks, with multiple sources claiming that the next-gen console might even launch by the end of next year to give Nintendo's Wii U a real challenge. The most recent report stated that Ubisoft Montreal is currently working with 'target boxes' and "all signs point to the finalized console arriving at retail in late 2012." If you ask Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter, however, it's all hogwash.

Speaking to IndustryGamers in an upcoming "Pachter's Podium" column, the analyst told us that launching an Xbox 360 successor by the end of 2012 doesn't make much sense for Microsoft. Instead, he's fairly confident that Microsoft is actually getting set to release an updated version of the Xbox 360.

"Those rumors are silly. Microsoft is still selling a ton of Xbox 360s, and they won't replace the existing one until sales begin to slow. I think the rumors are based upon leaks about modifying the current Xbox 360 to allow it to operate Windows 8," Pachter commented. "I fully expect a new model of Xbox 360 by holiday 2012, but don't think we see a new console altogether from Microsoft until 2014."

What do you think? The Xbox 360 is already 6 years old, but it's still doing tremendously well and has room for further price cuts.

A Nextbox in 2012 just doesn't seem likely. They're already making tons of money and will probably make even more money next year off the X360 in terms of software and hardware. Releasing a new console then seems counter-productive. 2013 seems more probable, 2014 is a bit far fetched though.

I'm not sure about a remodel next year though. I guess we'll see.

Here is the thing about Pachter

He is a legitimate industry analyst, he will inavariably know things us form posters could only dream about knowing.

If next box was really going to launch 12 months from know im willing to be pachter wouldve at least gotten some hints.

Highly doubt Microsoft would do another redesign. Windows 8 integration with 360? No chance.

Lol.. Pachter. Clueless as always and throwing any rumours around and inventing new ones just to show he's still alive?

Do you really think an "updated XBox360" makes sense? What about the 60-70 million XBoxes that suddenly became incompatible?

What is the point for MS of having to support three models in 2013 - one of which would barely sell 10mio in it's lifetime?

I'm not even sure a new "Slim Slim 360" would make any sense by the end of 2012 - as soon as the new XBox is out, sales of any old model will dwindle to irrelevance within months.

It doesn't make sense, unless the old xboxes are capable of performing exact same features - even if a bit slower there is no way there will be that drastic a change in hardware, alienating a large existing userbase without releasing an actual new console just doesn't make sense.

Pachter just kills me sometimes with his thinking, I'd hate to argue with him about game industry, let alone politics or religion.

Disconnect and self destruct, one bullet a time.

i still think 2013 but microsoft might just launch in 2012 to avoid launching with PS4

well if they are able to..

if Patcher believes this then he's lost his fuck'n mind. we have a better chance of getting a PS3 slim 2 then a redesigned 360. talk about out of touch with reality.

what is he like 1 in a billion for his bogus predictions? the sad part is he hasn't been fired yet. Patcher is snorting some pretty heavy stuff laced with some brain deteriorating chemicals.

If they do release a re-design it will be purely internal and will only be a cost saving measure, if they release a new look 360 it would confuse people not long afterward when the next Xbox comes out. And windows 8 intergration into the 360 just seems stupid when you consider that it would not benefit anybody in anyway whatso ever. Although I am still pretty certain that the next Xbox will not release late 2012, that will be left for the 360 to capitalise on its last Christmas season with a good deal of software and a very considerable price cut.

2014? I can't see MS giving the WiiU a two year head start. Especially after seeing how well they did with a one year head start.
