Forums - Sony - Playstation 4 Wishlist Thread

It’s been over 5 years now since the PlayStation 3 first released on November 11th 2006, and the once future-proof console is finally starting to show its age. With rumors of a PlayStation 4 starting to circulate i have been making a list of what i would like to see on the PS4.

1: More Power

To start off with the obvious, the PS4 needs to be more powerful if gamers are going to want to upgrade. Specifically, the memory on the console has to be upgraded substantially to stop the bottleneck that developers have consistently faced on the PS3. More power will lead to better graphics and bigger games, Sony should also try to make sure that there next gen console is stronger than their competition's if they wanna be recognized as the most advanced system agian.

2: Faster Blu-ray

Another problem that i had troubles with the PS3 is the slow Blu-ray drive, that leads to slow loading and means that many games require an install. Considering most developers don’t even use the second layer of the Blu-ray, an entirely new format doesn’t seem necessary, but extra space would be a bonus.

3: Cross Game Chat

I’ve used in-game chats on the 360 only a handful of times, and really wouldn’t be that fussed if it never came to the PS4, but the fact is a huge number of gamers seem to want the feature. Sony has to show they are willing to listen to their fans, and providing Cross Game Chat would finally allow other requested features to get the attention they deserve.

4:Better support for independent developers:

As far as platform holders go, Sony have always been rather kind to indie studios, with programs like the PSN Pub Fund helping cover the costs of the developers. But with the rise of smartphones as a lucrative and viable platform, it’s becoming increasingly hard for developers to justify developing on the PSN. Considering there are over 200 million iOS devices, and a dev kit costs $99, while there are around 55 million PS3s and a dev kit costs around $20,ooo, many smaller developers have chosen mobiles over consoles, depriving PS3 gamers of thousands of potential games.

5: Keep the DualShock:

The DualShock is one of the strongest parts of the PlayStation brand, with millions of gamers having grown up only using the controller. Admittedly, some gamers do have trouble using the controller for long periods on shooter games, so a few tweaks wouldn’t hurt, but the overall design should remain unchanged if Sony doesn’t want to receive the same feedback as they had when they announced the boomerang controller.

6: Keep the Move, Lose the Eye

The PlayStation Move is an incredibly precise controller, and really can’t get much more precise. As such, it seems rather pointless to upgrade it, especially when you consider that no games on the PS3 have fully tapped its potential. The Eye, on the other hand, is low-res and grainy, with a microphone and lens that can’t match the rival camera the Kinect. An upgrade on the camera, along with it’s software to include similar voice control functionality as the Kinect, seems like a natural progression. The new camera would also have far more developer support and sales than the Move if it was launched alongside the PS4, rather than mid-lifecycle.

7: No crazy promises

The ‘original’ PS3 was awesome. It had two HDMI ports, three Ethernet ports and six USB ports, supported 120FPS games and played 4D. By comparison, the PS3 now seems weak and malnourished, despite its many great qualities. To avoid diminishing the impact of the final PS4, Sony should reveal specs only when they are finalized.

8: Don’t delay

Equally, release dates should only be revealed when they are completely certain- there’s nothing worse that the pain of realizing the console/game you’ve been carefully saving for for the last year has been delayed.

9: Have good relations with japanese developers

I think one of the reasons why the PS2 was so succesful was because it recieved many exclusives/support from 3rd party japanese developers. I think if sony got back to having a healthy relationship with there developers such as Konami, Square Enix, Capcom and Bandi Namco. They could really do good next gen. :)

What do yall think about my wishlist? And what do you want in the PS4 and from sony next gen??

I think your spot on now lets see if I can be the first to post. Yea buddy first to post.

Now along with  everything you've said i'd say better marketing, have closer launch dates in each market, likely the most requested thing this gen that PS3 obviously lacks is JRPG's.

make sure every game has had the time it needs in dev., no copy cat shooters, i guess better online service but i don't play multiplayer online unless I'm training someone. and i guess last but certainly not least keep create play share, make it available for every genre, and make a franchise in every genre. 3rd party support is great but like Nintendo rely mostly on yourself but don't neglect 3rd party either, but i could personally do without them.

Oh and make sequels for every ip Sony owns. Did I mention JRPG's? Lots and lots of JRPG's. Basically PS2 reincarnated.

great thread PSN.

Very good requests.

*Console*

First and foremost using the same method in development as they did with the PS Vita is key. Developers make the games, give them a voice in what they will be developing for. Make sure the final result a compromise between new technologies, and developer familiarity.

My personal wish is to see a substantial amount of memory included. That is what developers always complain about, and it is not limited to PS3. I would like to see no less than 6GB, although 8GB would be ideal.

Putting a small SSD in every system, with all the proper controllers for SSD's would go a long way in making the system competitive throughout the life cycle. This along with a 12x, 4 layer capable Bluray drive would assure quick load times, and much needed streaming speed.

As far as the CPU and GPU are concerned, PS3 backwards compatibility is a must. Other than that give the devs what they want.

Price wise. I want to see a system on the cutting edge. No less than $400 at launch, but no more than $600. Make sure that losses are no more than $60 to $100 a unit sold.

*OS*

Keep the XMB, and improve the it. Give all sections the same layout as an open picture file, even when browsing files. Allow searches by name, file size, file type, date imported, ect. Allow multiple files or media to be opened at once. Example, multiple internet pages, a video, a song, multiple pictures.

Make the browser competitive. Partner with Google or Mozilla.

Keep enough memory reserved, or allow it to be snapped to the SSD, to allow full XMB access at all times.

Create a miniature XMB that can be accessed in game with only the essentials, (Settings, Pictures, Music, Internet, PSN)

Password protected users, and folders.

I have more, but this allown would be a great start, some would even be nice for PS3.

*Peripherals*

I would love to see the Vita incorporated day one, possibly even in an optional bundle. The dual shock must never leave, and as you said, "leave move, update the eye".

Make external HDD's more integrated, thus allowing for a smaller SSD to save on cost, but expandable cheaper memory. With USB 3.0 it should be plenty fast for video music, and backing up.

*Games*

Set the bar with first party titles just like this gen. Very the offerings from studios to help fill out the portfolio better. Tighten relations with third parties, and do more to get time exclusive. Tier prices better, and balance the sales to price.

Day 1 - $59.99
25M - $49.99
50M - $39.99

I believe this would push more software, and return more profits/revenue.

*Services*

PSN/Sony Network Services

-Never charge for gameplay.
-Allow all types of media to be purchased, rented, or subscribed to.
-Give the consumers power, allow them to choose the services they want, and to what limit.
-Bundle services together for a cheaper price, and incorporate a system were customer, customized bundles see price benefits.
-Include a much improved Home.
-Give the people cross game chat.

just dont price the b!tch too high

that is all :)

For some reason I never get sick of next-gen wishlist threads! (no sarcasm, I actually like them).

1. More power - and I don't mean necessarily better graphics (1080p should be sufficient for another generation) but just more processing power so games can have more stuff going on at one time and can be more complicated, better physics, better gameplay, etc. I hope to see 1080p (native) and 60FPS games at launch and all throughout the generation.

2. Better online - Cross-game chat is an absolute must! This is easily the biggest thing missing from PS3. Also just better servers and what-not to match next-gen Xbox Live. I honestly wouldn't mind paying an annual fee if it means online equal to XBL (or better). They missed out on hundreds of millions of potential dollars by not keeping online free this gen. If they feel like making it free then be my guest, but nobody would blame them for charging.

3. Better games close to launch. There was nothing to play on PS3 until about Fall 2007 besides Resistance and Oblivion (for me anyways)...so please Sony, plan to have some good games at launch for the PS4. GT6 at launch would be amazing, plus one of their shooter franchises like Killzone 4 or Resistance 4, and a family friendly game like LittleBigPlanet3 or something like that.

4. Price had better be $300 tops for the entry model. I think they could do like a $300 250gb model and a $400 500gb model or something like that. If they only do one SKU it had better be $300...or at the VERY most $400 with a price drop the next year to a more reasonable $350 or $300.

5. Slim re-design earlier on in the life. Say the PS4 launches in Fall 2013...I would love to see a PS4 Slim around 2015 accompanied with a $50-100 price drop. I'm a sucker for re-designs, I bought both the PS3 slim and Xbox 360 slim after owning both regular fat models. Re-designs breathe new life into the console and would give PS4 an edge going into holiday 2015.

6. Please please please just have a regular dualshock 4 packed in with the console, keep PS Move related stuff sold separately. I would like to see Dualshock 4 be redesigned to be slightly bigger/heavier (only like 10% bigger or so) and have the joysticks repositioned more like the 360 controller. Basically I just want it more like the 360 controller to put it simply. I grew up with dualshock and I love it but I have to admit 360 has the best controller.

7. Make it easy to develop for, and keep using Blu-ray (no new format system). Blu-ray is probably the biggest reason the PS3 "failed" (by failed I mean didn't come 1st place) since it forced them to delay the system and make costs astronomical...so they better keep using it next gen to get their money's worth out of it. I would like it easy to develop for so we get games of equal quality to the Xbox 720 version and without delays.

8. Keep up the great work on new (or just re-booted) exclusive IP's. This gen we got Uncharted, Resistance, Heavy Rain, LBP, LA Noire, Valkyrie Chronicles, InFamous and more! Plus Killzone was brought back from the dead and is in full swing. Hopefully we get this many good exclusive IP's next gen.

This seems like a lot of demands but really its quite simple. All I want is a slightly more powerful console at a good price point, with good games and good online.

Oh yeah and PS3 backwards compatibility for sure. PS1 and PS2 BC would be nice to have as well but not quite as mandatory as PS3 BC.

After seeing the glasses with head tracking in the other thread i think it would be cool if they went that direction. I do not think they will, but it would be cool. One of the steps to VR.

yeah, this time they should make it a point to include Backwards compatibility.....

I think the days of tons and tons of jRPGs are over for consoles and outside of Japan.  But, I do think jRPG devs will get on board earlier than they did with the PS3.  I doubt they will be trying to make them work with the next Xbox console like they did with the 360 - which didn't work out too well for them.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

Spot on with your requests although the major thing for me will be backwards compatibility for ym ps3 games!I have over 70 of them and I will continue to increase my library!
