Forums - PC - Baldur's Gate still Kicking?

Before I bought a Wii, I was pretty big on Baldur's Gate 2, one of the reasons is that I found out there were numerous modding communities through which extra fanmade content could be added to the game. I've even done a little modding myself(Beastmaster and Wizard Slayer kit improvement and mime Kit addition) and was wondering if anyone else has played Baldur's Gate 2 recently?

Also wondering, for those of you that do own the game, did you ever use any of the weidu based fan content, and if so, which pieces were your favorites to use?

My personal favorite of course is BG1tutu, which allows you to play the original Baldur's Gate game on the Baldur's Gate 2 engine, as well as the other fan mods that tweak the gameplay in order to support the new game rules.

EDIT: Since so far, it seems that many people didn't realize that there were mods for Baldur's Gate 2, I'm going to add this link, which has a comprehensive list of nearly every major mod for the game.

Basically, in order to instal any Weidu based mod for BG2, you will need to extract all the files that are part of the mod download(usually this will consist of a folder, a .tp2 file and a .exe file), then place those in the override folder of your BG2 - SoA folder.

After you put all the files there, you need to click on and run the .exe file. This will open up a dos window and will ask you which components of the mod to install. Many mods allow you to choose individual components to instal. If you aren't certain what each component does, you can usually find a readme folder that will give a more detailed description of what each mod changes in the game.

And since I'm the OP of this topic, I guess i can take a moment to shamefully plug what work I have done for the modding community. It's been well over a year since I've done anything for it though:

I've only played it on the original XBOX so no, no usermade content. Unless you could do it on there. Could you?

I've been playing it since 2000, and stopped at 2006 when my disc 1 and 2 stopped working. I never really knew about the modification communities back then, so I never experienced that, but Baldur's Gate 2 is easily the best game ever made, IMO. Neverwinter Nights is great, too, but it'll never be as good as Baldur's Gate.

Funny you should post that, I just started playing it again. I so wish they'd do a BG3 or Freedom Force 3 on Wii so you could play with your friends and everyone uses their wiimote to select their actions/movements.

Havn't used any mods for it. Didn't really realize their were mods for it. I sorta assumed that was just a NWN thing. Anything I should be sure to get?

Definitely still play it once in a while.

I have a 7 step install for BG2 after default installation which includes the Weimer Ease of Use mod, the Ascension mod, and the Weimer Tactics mod.  The EoU is for convenience whereas the next two pump up the difficulty to make things challenging.  I also have about 114 character portraits and some custom voicesets.

I tried a couple of the additional character mods as well.  They were okay, but nothing really amazing.

Great game with lots of replayability for me

@DMeisterJ - no, both Xbox and Playstation had games that were CALLED Baldur's Gate, but really had little to do with the PC game other than location. If anything what you played was like a non customizable version of Never Winter Nights.

@Tifa - The modifiations for Baldur's Gate were huge. Someone had basically developed a program that was capable of appending data to the files in the override folder, rather than only being able to replace them. This meant that as long as people made their changes carefully, one mod could overlap with another mod, rather than the user having to decide between the two of them.
A lot of the mods added new characters, new dialog, new kits for different classes, and new encounters, some changed rules, made encounters harder, or essentially created an entirely new game.
One of my favorite mods for Baldur's Gate 2 was the Hell's Trials mod, which fleshed out the ending encounter so you had a Good choice, an Evil choice, but also a 3rd choice in addition to that. When you completed these trials, normally, the game would change your alignment to Neutral Evil, but the Hells trials mod allows you to make a gradual shift based on your original alignment, and the number of good, neutral and evil acts you make. you can actually go from evil alignment to good alignment if you stick completely to good acts, instead of only being able to drop to Neutral Evil.

Wow, that sounds pretty tasty appealing, maybe I'll get a working version off of BitTorrent just to check them out. I think you may have taken out another six years of my life. ^_^

I updated my original post to include information on where to find the mods. If you played the original Baldur's Gate and enjoyed that even in the slightest, then I also recommend getting BG1tutu, as it will update to the BG2 engine, which means it can support higher screen resolutions, and many fanmods add BG2 style banter (including some romance options) to the original game.
This also lets you create your character and class according to the BG2 game engine rules, play through the BG1 story, and then move that character (may need to do this manually) to your BG2 game for a more seamless transition.

the one drawback is that you need to do full installs of both BG TotSC, and BG2 - SoA + ToB in order to get this to run properly.

Ouch. That's at least 20 hours of torrenting since my internet isn't the greatest. Good thing I can do it overnight and through school hours. Thanks for the links!

@ Grey - Thanks for the link/info. Now if you don't see me on this site anymore you know where my life went.
