Forums - PC - Help please! (HDMI & headphones...)

I hope somebody can help me...

Today I bought a 27'' monitor, because my laptop's 15'' screen was too tiny to work on.

I connected the monitor via HDMI and it works flawlessly.

But now all the sound comes out of the monitor's built in speakers, which isn't bad per se, but sometimes I like to watch movies with headphones on...

Is there a way I can disable the sound from the monitor and use headphones via the laptop? (The monitor does not have a headphone jack, only an AUDIO IN)

Any help would be very appreciated.

That's weird. No headphone jack AND no audio out? I guess your only option is to hook the headphones to your PC/Laptop.

Sometimes the answer is so obvious, you overlook it.

Okay. Read your post again. You already thought of that. The monitor has speaker but no volume control!?

The monitor has volume control, but that doesn't help in this case.
Even when I mute the monitor tThere comes no sound out of the laptop's headphone jack any more.
I'm hoping there's an option somewhere in the settings (Windows Vista btw...) that will me allow to use the headphone jack again, but I can't find what I'm looking for.

Maybe just use EARphones? not as good but it will get the job done

Earphones use the same plug/jack as headphones. And the laptop isn't outputting any sound over the headphone/earphone jack any more. :(

^^^What he said. I'm not at home but you should be able to change sound settings so that it comes from either the HDMI, the Heasphone Jack, or both. Just go to your control panel and make the proper adjustments.

Or Google/Youtube it if you need a guide to get you by.

ok heres what you do. im not sure was operating system you are running so im going to assume its windows. go to control panel, then sound. make sure the playback tab is selected at the top. now there should be a list of all the audio codecs currently installed on your computer. i would suggest playing some music when you open this so you can see which one is the active one via the frequency bar to the right of each codec. a sample list is speakers, digital output device (hdmi), and then speakers/hp. thats what mine says at least. now all you have to do is double click the one you want to run audio then click set default. now if you currently have a program open it will not change the codec automatically (at least on windows vista) because generally the program cant change codecs while being used unless its recording software. you need to restart the program (im guessing windows media player or something similar) and then it should be playing from the new codec. hope this helps.

I finally found the right setting! Thanks guys for the tips so far!
It's a bit of a hassle, but I'll be able to use headphones again!

By the way, I'm running the Japanese version of Windows Vista.

Oh, and once I get a HDMI-to-DVI cable I can finally play my PS3 in HD! Until now I only played it on an old SD TV. It was really hard to read small letters and stuff...
