The topic is about the best graphics on consoles, this generation.
You should not base this on graphics for each genre and so on.
The fact is, putting a game like Uncharted 3 against a game like Skyrim; Uncharted 3 will come out on top because it simply looks b e t t e r.
What Skyrim does, Uncharted does not. This allows Naughty Dog to focus on the details as it's not nearly as huge and massive as Skyrim. Vice versa applies to Bethesda.
It is not a fluke why the 2008 GOTY Graphics have largely gone to MGS4 in 08, UC2 in 09 and GoW3 in 10.
We shall see what game gets most in 2011. I know what you are all getting at with the personal preferences, but keeping an objective mind; what game simply looks better? Put aside the genre and what not. There is no denying what game(s) come to mind.
That's what I am getting at. Otherwise the whole "best" term can't really be taken into an objective account as I can purely state my subjective opinion by saying: UC2 looks like horseshit because the design is so ugly IN MY OPINION.

It's because their games look so vastly superior compared to other games. Just because its linear doesn't change that fact. Yes its easier, but we have to accept that linear games simply look more polished. But this doesnt apply to everything. I can throw shit ton of linear games that look like horse shit. It's just that the best linear games this generation are at a far different level than other genres in games. I suspect every generation has been like this, but I haven't been around then in order to comment on that. The more open the game, the less visually "striking" it is, really. Despite a game being able to be open and still look great, it still won't be at the level of linear games. Now that might be impressive to you, but visually, once again, there is no chance in hell what game looks better and usually plays better aswell. Asume you had 0 knowledge of gaming. You pick up the controller, you put in Uncharted 3, and then you put in Rage. You're likely to be awe'd by both games, but you will litterarly have your jaw floored by the obvious in Uncharted 3. How real that game looks and for example: How amazing the desert is, despite you barely getting any control.
