http://money.cnn.com/2011/09/16/technology/windows_8_chipmakers/index.htm It has already been announced that Windows 8 will work with ARM processors. Likely that this whole thing is supposed to say that Xbox 720 will be based on a modified version of Windows 8, otherwise we won't be seeing the next system for a long ass time. |
Has to. With the way it looks and works, it's an improved win7 oriented for tablets and mobile devices.
But I did not think of that at the time of the post. Will ARM CPU's ever be viable for home builders, I wonder?
Yeah that Windows 9 thing threw me off as well. Wonder if it was just a typo/mistake and they meant Windows 8. Otherwise its still at least a couple years off because aren't we just on Windows 7 right now?
I don't buy this, but...
If it's true then I'm not impressed. Xbox is supposed to be bigger, better and overpowered compared to the opposition. That's why I bought the original Xbox, and why the 360 could compete with PS3 despite launching a whole year earlier.
I guess MS doesn't want to lose so much money again.
Also the 'Kinect adoption' thing is hilarious.
Next gen is sure going to be interesting.

The earliest it can be released is late 2012 so it should run on 22nm chipsets. So it being smaller is a nobrainer its pretty much impossible to make a big console using 22nm chipsets.

The changes run deeper than that, I've used W8 for a bit of time now, and I very much prefer it to W7, even on my laptop. I don't think ARM processors are going to replace x86 or x64 for enthusiasts though, especially because you can't run old Windows programs on them.
OT:
That doesn't seem unlikely. Windows 9 may not be out for a while, but Microsoft can still create an OS for the Xbox based on Windows 8 that will also fit with W9. And if this generation has proven anything, it's that graphics aren't what matters most. I'd honestly rather have a small and reliable Xbox that is more of an incremental update over the 360, but comes with a Kinect, than a new powerhouse of a console that is really expensive, and only comes with a traditional controller.

How about emulation? Like Intel macs emulating PPC mac software (or other way around, forgot), WOW64, etc... could work.
I'm not installing an OS until full release though. Plus, I love W7 to death.
