It is somewhat strange that the price of this almost doubled compared to US price...when taking currency exchange in to account. I am aware that Euro price uncludes the tax while the 499 us still needs tax added. Could it be that Sony as a brand is considered more premium in Europe compared to USA and they can get away with charging more? |
It is the way the world works, Dis. A piece of denim cut from the same cloth and mended by the same people can be 50x the price by the time a brand name is stuck on it.
It is not a Sony thing, it is every company under the sun.

OP: Have you seen the price of Apple displays? This is hugely costly, no doubt but could actually be worse...
Europeans make more money on average than americans + sony is more popular in europe meaning europeans will be willing to pay more for sony products.

If by Europeans you mean Luxemburg and Norway only...sure.

You have to take cost of living into account, but you're right, not all of europe, just scandinavia and most of western europe.

they have to compete in US with MS,NINTY which they don't have to do so much in other areas due to sony's brand name following
plus the tax situations that differ

These figures apparently take into account the relative cost of living and the inflation rates of the countries but are still misleading as America's large pecentage of billionaires and multi-millionaires cover those on a small income.
There was a more "reliable" statistic that was published in the FT (I can't find the article online) that did indeed show that Western Europeans on average earn more than Americans.
The FT article's aim was to point out that the wealth of countries in Western and Northern Europe is more evenly spread than in the US.

I wish Uncharted 3 was $75 in Europe.
We pay €70, which is about $100.
