It all started with Final Fantasy VII for me on the PS1.
Such a classic game.I cant wait for the HD remastered version for PS3 if they ever announce it.

Wow, so many here started on the PS1.

My experience started when I was looking for Zelda-type games on the SNES. Came across quite a few decent ones, only two stand out to me at the moment: Illusion of Gaia and Secret of Mana. After playing Secret of Mana, I followed Square to see if their other games were just as good. My first Final Fantasy was III (VI) on the SNES, and my initial reaction was that I hated it (first menu based game I played). After some time, I tried Mystic Quest and enjoyed it, then moved on to IV and loved it, and finally decided to give VI another chance, and I loved it, too.

Not many in Australia knew about Final Fantasy back then (I'm thinking around 1994 or so) since the only copies that could be played here were imported copies with a converter, and Final Fantasy VI wasn't quite PAL compatible even at that (the menu screen occasionally blacked out inside towns, and the ending for the game would crash out halfway because the picture couldn't keep up with the music).

Back in early 2008, I decided to give non-Pokemon RPGs a go. I started with FFI&II on the GBA and was absolutely hooked. For over a year, I did a marathon playthrough of all the mainline games (apart from XIII, obviously), all 3 tactics games, VII DoC and X-2.

I was actually initially exposed to the series through watching my friend play FFX on his PS2, but the only mainline FF game i've ever bought is the III remake on DS, which i never finished because the final gauntlet run is broken as hell.

nah, you just have to level up your characters more.

That part i get, but the dungeon they give you that's right before the Point of No Return has levels much much lower than what exist beyond The Point, thus leading to the most tedious grinding i've ever encountered, which led me to drop the whole damn thing

Walked into a shop with some money OR rather with my parents money OR with my parents (one of the three).

Was looking to buy a game for my PS1.

This was probably round about the time FF8 was released.

So yeah back in the day i use to buy games at random, check the covers out, check the boxart, check the pictures on the back, read the story etc. So yeah i saw FF8 checked it out and i was like ok lemme give this a try.

Got home...and i was like wtf is this shit???

Haha then i started playing it, beat and got ifrit then i was sold :D The awesome gaurdian/aion scenes really got me. And on top of fighting them you get to use them in battle! The game was always confusing to me though, and the 2nd disk starts slowly so i didnt play it as much as i should have. But thats what sparked my interest in the series. Been a fan ever since.

Gone are the days of buying random games based on the boxart....was always a hit and miss affair. I remember i bought Enchanted Arms for the ps3 this same way. Never the fuck bought random games after that.

First contact was back in 1992. I used to buy the official Nintendo magazine here in Mexico (I bought it for almost 15 years straight, I sold my entire collection of it in 2010), and in some number they had tips and strategies for this weird game called FFII (FFIV). I was like "hey this game is pretty, I should give it a try when I can". Later that year, I found a copy for rent in Blockbuster, so I rented it... but unfortunately, my english language understanding was very primitive back then (I was 5 years old for God's sake!) so I only rented it once because I really couldn't understand what was going on.

Then in 1994, I had the chance to rent Final Fantasy III (FFVI) on the same Blockbuster. My english was much better by then, so I got hooked with the story and characters. I rented it multiple times just to finish it! I actually wanted to buy it, but I just couldn't find it anywhere and those suckers at Blockbuster didn't want to sell me their only copy.
