See, this is why a lot of people think FFVII is the best Final Fantasy ever...for a lot of people it was their first. (X as well).
for me, I started with Final Fantasy VI. my one friend told me to play it because he was really into RPG games. I tried it, but couldn't even get past the introductory dungeon, and I thought it was just the STUPIDEST thing ever...the idea of just picking from a list and letting your characters do it was the least entertaining thing I could have imagined at the time (I almost exclusively played platformers and action games.) My friend, being the respectful git he was, agreed that yes, that made sense and decided to not pursue the issue, but a few years later sent Super MArio RPG: LEgend of the Seven Stars my way, which was equal parts platformer and RPG (there's a lot of jumping puzzles, and the battle system was a lot more interactive.) I gave it a shot and fell in love.
after that, he reminded me that Final Fantasy III was made by the same people who made Mario RPG, so I gave it another shot and it was phenomenal.
Now VI is my alltime favorite game. since then I've bought every real FF game (VII, VIII, IX, X, XII), and I went back to get some previous games, though I've not beaten 3, or 5. never got a chance to get 5, and the only version of 3 I had was the DS remake, and I greatly disliked it. I did LOVE I and IV, though.
